SurvivalBlog Readers’ & Editors’ Snippets

Our weekly Snippets column is a collection of short items: responses to posted articles, practical self-sufficiency items, how-tos, lessons learned, tips and tricks, and news items — both from readers and from SurvivalBlog’s editors. Note that we may select some long e-mails for posting as separate letters.

It is time to contact your U.S. House and Senate members again, to encourage them to get both the Hearing Protection Act (HPA — de-regulating suppressors) and the SHORT Act (de-regulating SBRs and SBSes) into the pending budget reconciliation bill, and pass them! Please phone their offices several times.

“I wanted to give you an update on how retail silver and gold are being delt with in coin stores. Last week I went to a coin store that

I have been doing business with since 1993. I am a retired retail jeweler and did lots of business with this store, buying 24k casting shot, selling scrap gold and silver. This store was sold to a reputable refiner some years ago, so they are acting at the will of the refiner.
So, I presented my gold and silver scrap to an employee who has been there since 1993 and I learned that silver scrap is considered toxic and gold scrap would be purchased at a 35% discount.  Needless to say, we had this conversation and I did not make a transaction.
Since silver and gold price increase, silver has been sold and not being purchased at the retail level, so the refiners are stuck and also out of cash. They have a lot of gold and the cash flow and volatility has impacted their normal flow of business.
My contact believes that this situation will adjust, with time.”
