This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest. We also mention companies located in the American Redoubt region that are of interest to preppers and survivalists. Today, we focus on the recent eastern Idaho agricultural water controversy. (See the Idaho section.)
Idaho
Will 500,000 acres of Idaho farmland lose access to water?
An update: Water curtailment order lifted for East Idaho farmers. Here is a quote:
“Groundwater irrigators and surface water irrigators have completed a deal that saves 330,000 acres of Idaho farmland from being dried up and averts economic catastrophe in the state.
A mitigation agreement for 2024, brokered by Governor Brad Little and Lt. Governor Scott Bedke, has now been signed by all parties and has been submitted to the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR for approval. When the deal is approved, IDWR will lift the curtailment for all nine ground water districts whose patrons irrigate with groundwater from the ESPA.”

Central & Eastern Oregon
Dog travels 4 miles to get help after owner’s car plummets into embankment in eastern Oregon. The article begins:
“A man who accidentally drove off an embankment in eastern Oregon, stranding him in the woods overnight, was rescued the following day after one of his dogs traveled four miles to get help.
Brandon Garrett was traveling with his four dogs to meet his family at a campsite in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest on June 2 when he crashed on a turn. One of the dogs, named Blue, was able to reach the campsite and alert Garrett’s family, and the next day his brother reported that they had located his vehicle but were unable to reach it due to the “steep, bushy ravine,” according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.
During the rescue, Baker County Sheriff Travis Ash was looking for an access point to the creek, when he heard someone yell for help. About 100 feet away from the vehicle, Garrett was found alive, along with his three other dogs.”

Wyoming
Wyoming mule deer famously known as an “ultra-long distance migrator” dies. A pericope:
“A Wyoming mule deer that has broken scientific records has died.
Deer 255 has been tracked by the Wyoming Migration Initiative at the University of Wyoming since 2016, and she was quite the anomaly.
Gregory Nickerson is a writer and filmmaker for the Wyoming Migration Initiative. He explains, “The University of Wyoming has been tracking mule deer migrations from the Red Desert to the [Hoback Basin] near Bondurant and Jackson Hole for about 10 years, and out of all that time Deer 255 was the deer that migrated the farthest. She was also one of the oldest deer we were able to track.”
Deer 255 was first captured by biologists in the leucite hills near Superior, Wyoming, where she spent her winters. She shocked researchers after she had split apart from her herd – which had already migrated 150 miles to the Hoback Basin area, – and traveled an additional 90 miles to Idaho.
That’s a total distance of 242 miles over 52 days.”
