Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books, and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how-to” self-sufficiency videos. There is also an emphasis on links to sources for storage food and a variety of storage and caching containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This week, some of the few Baofeng UV-5R multiband transceivers still available in the United States. (See the Gear & Grub section.)

Featured Antique Gun of the Week
Our featured antique gun of the week is a scarce Remington Rolling Block .45-70 Saddle Ring Carbine. Like most other pre-1899 guns, it can be mailed or shipped directly to your doorstep without any paperwork or FFL dealer involvement. (Be sure to check your state and local laws before ordering.) NORMAL AMERICAN: THE HELICOPTERS OF CHILE RETURN

I don’t completely understand all of the FCC documents that I have reviewed, but I would point out that the Baofeng UV 5R has continuously been available on Amazon. The FCC 2018 advisory clearly indicates it should NOT be possible to operate such a radio outside of the amateur frequencies, however units that I purchased a year ago appear to be able to do out-of-ham without any problem. Has anyone purchased recent copies and tried programming them with CHIRP to verify what they can do? A different BTECH model ($56) actually has part 90 approval and we may be using it for business band when our license comes through. Need a little more information here….
Bought the newer model BFFH8 a few months back and it’s advertised to be within band. However the radio actually covers the broader spectrum. Programmed it with chirp too. Love the little thing. FCC doesn’t like that these can operate outside of a designated spectrum. These can. Not by a ton but they still can. FRS/GMRS are within this radios spectrum. Disclaimer: know what your doing with these. Listen all you want, but get a licence before hitting the PPT button. Unless it’s the only way you have to communicate. FCC allows that in an emergency.
Just the other day was very pleased with the performance through an OWA 6 element yagi that was less than 2:1 between 420 to 470Mhz. It was also resonant in the old UHF TV part of the spectrum. I used the newest Baofeng on hand as a signal generator. Some of these Baofengs still on the market could be older versions. Get them while to you, and the Btech mobiles. I’m in fact passing on an opportunity on a nice Yaesu, because it complies. I’m not surprised that these days that laws are for thee and not for me, so the FCC makes noise, and China does what it wants, anyway. Heck, so few even care about election fraud.
Woot (dot com) is also selling the controversial little BaoFeng radios today. $93 for a 5 pack. I just picked up a few extras for friends.
B-52 RECONNAISSANCE TIPS OF THE TRADE, VIETNAM

Put your cheap safe in a prominent place and set it up so that any effort to open it or tear it off the wall sets of a 135db alarm on your rooftop. Design the circuit so that it cannot be shut off and does not require house power to work. THEN your safe, which is the first thing robbers will spot and try to get into, will become a trap for them.
Anon,
I notice some folk think like decent people… believers in TheJusticeSystem in a NationOfLaws.
To evaluate my safety, I try to think like *’a mob of lying thieving sadistic psychopaths with a hatred of Americans’ aka ‘any available marxists’…. during Bracken’s “Rwanda x Bosnia”.
How does this appear?
a)
I advise against visible wealth or a ‘safe’ to protect it.
* I suggest old rattly vehicles and second-hand furniture/clothes instead of a pelosi-mansion in a gated-community.
* I also suggest invisible concrete structures with invisible steel roofs.
b)
Imagine the goofballs observing your place, your family, your trips outside.
* Remote-piloted aircraft aka ‘drones’ are cheap and easy to operate.
* Casual passersby on bicycles or pushing a stroller, old-folks walking the dog.
* The government agents registering your swim-pool, tennis-court, three-car garage, your Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz, your pre-teen daughters.
c)
Now, imagine the goofballs capturing a loved one… or maybe your favorite dog or horse.
* Imagine the goofballs threatening to poke an eye or chop a finger.
* How long before you acquiesce and open the safe(s)?
* One eye, two fingers, three of your five children?
.
.
.
* living near Eugene Oregon, we see a hundred-thousand vocal vicious examples of ‘your average everyday marxists’.
If you believe your isolation or neighbors make you immune to ‘Rwanda x Bosnia’, I wish you well.
Indeed.
*Sigh* This world was a much less scary place before the cubs came along.

Senator Corey Booker on 11/19/20 released a statement about the bill titled “The Justice for Black Farmers Act”. Booker is introducing South African Style land confiscation to give land back to “Black Farmers”. This land redistribution system would be lead by an Under Secretary of Agriculture for Equitable Land Access.

Cooked Frog, I am not sure what this sentence means.
Booker is introducing South African Style land confiscation to give land back to “Black Farmers”.
South African Style. What is that? The article is not specific.
You have Black Farmers in quotes, implying that it is a fake term. I know Black Farmers. They are for real.
Question: If your guns were stolen, then sold to a third party, would you want them returned? What does the law in your state say about that?
A lot of land was stolen from Black Farmers over the past 150 years.
Here is one of many articles: https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a28702077/land-theft-african-americans-south/
From the article: A war waged by deed of title has dispossessed 98 percent of black agricultural landowners in America. They have lost 12 million acres over the past century.
Do you think folks who lost their land to theft deserve no justice?
Carry on
Just finished a week-long deer hunt using my little baofeng radios enjoying freedom not worrying about the FCC and ham snobs all worked up over nothing.
It made us safer and got us some practice with comms in very rough terrain.
