SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we look at Second Amendment Sanctuaries.
61% of U.S. Counties are Now Second Amendment Sanctuaries
One under-reported piece of news is that as of December, 2022, 61% of U.S. counties had declared themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries. Once this trend started, entire states followed suit. This has been going on since 2013, but the mass media has conspicuously ignored this groundswell of public opinion. A 2020-dated map shows the progress of the movement.

Red and Blue States — Americans Vote with Their U-Hauls
A recent Nevada newspaper column: Red and blue states — Americans vote with their U-Hauls. Here is a quote from the piece:
“Some of these developments are a continuation of longer [term] trends that have seen Americans for decades leaving colder Midwest and Northeast states for warmer southern confines. Yet, as The Wall Street Journal noted, all of Illinois’ neighbors gained population except Michigan. The California exodus also stands in stark contrast to the weather excuse. So do migration gains made by Idaho and Montana.”
And some related news “analysis”, from the ultra-liberal PBS: Political divide between red and blue states on display as governors inaugurated.
JWR’s Comments: This is now a well-established trend. In essence, the nation’s population is in the process of self-sorting. This is Balkanization, but in slow motion. Red States are getting more red, while Blue States are getting more blue. What started as a trickle has become a torrent. It is no wonder that websites like Conservative Move are getting lots of visitors.

Former British PM: Ukraine Should Join NATO
Boris Johnson Calls to Admit Ukraine to NATO – a Russia Redline. Here are the opening paragraphs of the article:
“Boris Johnson has called for Ukraine to be admitted to NATO and launched a thinly veiled attack on Germany and the US over the failed deal to donate tanks after a return to Ukraine this week.
CROSSING THE REDLINE
“What is the result of our decades-long failure to live up to our promise and admit the Ukrainians to the shelter of the Nato defensive umbrella?” he wrote.
“The result is the bloodiest war in Europe for 80 years. For the sake of clarity and stability and long-term peace, it is now clear, which it wasn’t before Putin’s invasion, that Ukraine must join.”

Pakistan’s Power Grid Collapses
Linked over at the Whatfinger.com news aggregation site: Nuclear Pakistan’s Power Grid Collapses, Leaving 200+ Million Without Electricity. An excerpt:
“The vast majority of the population of Pakistan – about 220 million of 240 million people – was left without electricity on Monday after a “widespread breakdown in the power system,” according to the Ministry of Energy.
Pakistan is one of the world’s most densely populated countries and boasts a stable of six operable nuclear reactors in addition to a power grid largely supplied by coal and other fossil fuels. It experiences routine regional blackouts, particularly in more remote regions, but Monday’s total collapse presents a new level of severity in infrastructure malfunction.
The blackout, which persisted in much of the country at press time on Tuesday, poses a new challenge for establishment Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who took over after the ouster of popular radical Islamist Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan, a proponent of global blasphemy laws who has publicly praised Osama bin Laden as a martyr, remains popular in Pakistan and is currently on a nationwide tour demanding new elections that could potentially restore him to power.”
