  1. Most of our moms taught us these things, but you would be surprised the people who don’t do these things because they DON’T know.

There are lots of “mom-isms” which are still with me today, and most of them are true. Like…”Eat your (vegetables/fruits); people are starving in China.” “Eat those prunes, they lube your innards.” “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” “Eat the liver, it makes you strong as a bull.” etc., etc., etc.

  2. The Air Force called the 800mg Motrin Vitamin M. Anything hurt? Anything sore? Any bang-ups, or anything else? Here! Have a massive bottle of Vitamin M, with multiple refills. One word of caution. Make sure to eat something with the larger doses, they will mess up your gut over time and cause GERD.

    1. Another helpful tip: while Motrin (Ibuprofen, Advil) should not be taken with any other NSAID such as Aspirin or Alive (Naproxen), Motrin can be safely taken with Acetaminophen (Tylenol), provided you do not exceed the maximum doses of either drug. At least one study has found the combination of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen to give just as much pain relief as Codeine.

  3. Really appreciate this article, it’s nicely woven and hits all of the basics. Of course, every time we read this, we got back to all of the wonderful lessons in JWR book Patriots which seems to hit most of this in the story version. We will be listening to a few books on CD this week in the evenings by the fire.

Thanks all for the blessing of sharing information via this site.

  4. Just a note about the finger oxygen meter. I recently heard a pulmonologist say that those meters will show a near-normal reading while the O2 is dropping until the level is very low. Then it will finally drop in the fingers and show on the monitor. If the meter shows a normal O2, but you are short of breath use another method to check.

  5. Thank you for the article and glad you mentioned hydrogen peroxide. It’s my Go To for a lot of issues. I am immune deficient so sanitation is a huge big deal for me. I clean my ears and sinuses with Qtips dipped in hydrogen peroxide. I actually have prevented severe sinus and ear infections or cleared them up using this method without having to resort to antibiotics. I rinse my toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide. Every time I get a cut or scrape, it’s soap and water followed by hydrogen peroxide rinse, followed by triple antibiotic ointment and a bandaid until the wound heals. For the gut, besides medicinal teas, a tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar. For the feet, soak in a mixture of apple cider vinegar, soap, and warm water. For particularly stinky feet, add a few drops of essential oil or mouthwash like Listerine.

By the way, if you take copious amounts of Tums or other antacids due to GERD (which I was diagnosed with), you can actually right the stomach with, shockingly, Apple Cider Vinegar – only 1T a day or every other day, eating earlier in the day, avoiding alcohol and spicy foods, etc. The acids that are reduced by the antacids also create an environment in the stomach that prevents its natural reduction of nasty germs. There’s always a catch with modern medicinals. I was able to heal my GERD this way.

I stock up on hydrogen peroxide for its many uses, as well as Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother for it’s health benefits. I see the shortages are occurring all over again, and glad I faithfully picked up a large bottle of hydrogen peroxide each time I went to the store.

    1. Apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are very important on my family’s list.
My wife of 50+ years and I take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 3 times per day.
      Happy Thanksgiving.

  6. I agree with everything you wrote. But I will point out that it is literally impossible to not rub your eyes. Better advice would be to realize this simple truth and advise people to make sure their hands are clean before the rub their eyes.

Sinuses; Get a salt water nasal spray. Have tissues handy.

  7. Take health advice as advisory, not mandatory. We are all different beings with different weaknesses.

As an example, a long, long time ago when I was young, I worked construction in freezing weather. I tended to get ear infections. Later, I discovered that by CAREFULLY cleaning the moisture from my ear canal with cotton swabs after each morning shower the ear infections no longer occurred. Perhaps it was coincidence but I think not.

  8. Dental Care: I have had severe calculus on my teeth all my life. Went to a local dentist 4 years ago. He wanted to pull 7 of my teeth at that time. Instead, I requested a second opinion from a periodontist. I have lost 2 of the teeth, but still have 5 of the 7. The Phillips Sonicare is one tool worth its weight in gold. I now have much less calculus, and cleanings are easier. Don’t use it like a toothbrush; hold it on the gum and tooth for 5 to 8 seconds, then move it. That stimulates the gum tissue. They also recommend the Waterpik water flosser and Proxabrushes for inter-dental cleaning.

Eye Care: There is a big difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. For those of you not aware, and ophthalmologist is an M.D. The ophthalmologist is much more highly trained in medical disease of the eye and its treatment.

    1. I second that emotion on Philips Sonicare. My dentist of nearly 30 years thought it was one of the best advances in dental care for getting and keeping our teeth clean and gums healthy!

  9. All things stated in this article are of benefit. May I suggest, as I have before on SB, that you start doing significant research into the area of Naturopathic/Homeopathic remedies. God has put on this planet (in natural form) everything we need to be healthy. With the advent of allopathic (western) medicine we have relinguished must of our personal responsibility for our own health. Have you ever wondered by the Christ Child received Frankincense and Myrrh from the wise men?

    1. Agree 100%. Modern western medicine can do great things if something is broken or bleeding, but for true health, I believe in natural methods of healing and strengthening the body. Too much of western medicine in profit-driven, more about enriching the pharma companies.

And if you like your liver, avoid Tylenol.

  10. Maybe a bit more important than a sugar level of 110, would be your A1C.
This is a check for diabetes.

I had an A1C of 9.6. I went on the Keto diet and lost 50 lbs. My A1C is now 6.3 and my BP is once again normal, off the BP meds as well. Prior BP 150/110, now 128/79.

I ate between 600-800 carbs a day 20 months ago, now I’m at about 30.

My physician literally saved my life!

  11. Hey,Fizbin…I started on keto recently too…lost 25 lbs so far…35 to go. was prediabetic for 15 years but when the doc said I was diabetic,I said NO and quit the pepsi and carbs and sugar after 62 years.Never took the medicine he prescribed. trying to get off the BP meds now.
