I have never understood why the movie Lord Jim was not better thought of.
Wild wild west: I liked Lord Jim too. It probably didn’t sit well with a lot of audiences because of two things. The cowardice charge while at sea, and the ending. In the last half of the movie he organizes and leads a resistance to pirates with the help of the locals. One of the local chiefs tells Jim that if even one person from the village dies fighting the pirates, Jim will forfeit his life. One villager dies, and you know the rest. The cowardice charge was dicey, but the end where he dies because one person defending their village did is moronic at best. Makes about as much sense as the phrase, “Violence never solved anything”. Or that killing a murderer will not bring back his dead victim. Quelle surprise! NOTHING will bring them back. Audiences saw the big straw man in the movie, and word of mouth did the rest.
Peter O’Toole is a fantastic writer.
His autobiography LOITERING WITH INTENT should be required reading!
