I’m pretty sure John Jay considered the government holding a gun to our heads and us saying, “Okay, take my money,” is the same as us giving our consent. Otherwise, Mr. Jay never in a million years would have fought for the constitution we now have. When you read his arguments for abandoning the Articles of Confederation in favor of our current constitution, that’s the only conclusion I can come to. He was not a huge fan of protecting our most basic private property rights.
I’m not a fan of Hamilton or Jay. Madison was a far better person. The Articles of Confederation was a far better constitution than the one we currently have. It just needed a little tweaking. Hamilton and Jay are the precursors to the modern neoconservative.
