  1. ‘Common Sense’ is a national treasure. Yet how many Americans have read it; a few homeschoolers perhaps?

Thomas Paine’s words would ring as true today as they did in 1776. He warned of a lack of masculinity, a short-sighted and selfish attitude that disregards its effects on future generations. Paine spoke to people being content with conditions that “will last my time”.

  2. How true. How many are even aware of the writings of the Founders, Paine, Franklin, Washington, Adams, Hancock, Jefferson and all the others. How many have even heard of the Federalist Papers, let alone read any of them. We could all do ourselves and our posterity a huge favor by making it required reading at home, (make it a discussion item after dinner) disregard what is allowed in the public school system, it won’t get taught there for any reason. Unless of course you attend Hillsdale College. I believe there it’s a requirement for their required basic classes.

    1. Duane, by all means. Parents, teach your children both the Federalist Papers as NS suggests and the Anti-Federalist Papers.

The latter lost and are less reread; ‘to the victor goes the spoils’. Few Americans are aware (I could stop there) that notable figures such as Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry were vocal opponents of the Constitution. Jefferson (from exile in France) expressed serious concerns about ratification.
