The casualty toll was high because of the preponderance of masonry building. The holding power of mortar is easily broken by the vibrations/shaking of an earthquake and then gravity takes over and the heavy stone/bricks fall. Reinforced concrete tends to hold together as does stick built building. The stick built and reinforced concrete building may still be damaged beyond repair but they don’t disintegrate in the same way a rock/brick and mortar construction does.
