  1. A lot of the upgrades mentioned on the 19x are also standard on the Gen 5 19, and, of course, you can use 17 and 19 magazines on the standard 19.

  2. The grip is the part that usually ‘prints’ and gives away the fact that someone is carrying. For concealed carry the 19 frame with a 17 slide might have been a batter choice.

  3. 1) In my opinion, SIG bought the MHS procurement with an extremely low price. The Army RFP had said price would be low on the list of priorities but the Army did NOT provide test reports showing how the guns had done in the full testing regime called for in the RFP — stopping power, reliability, accuracy were all supposed to be the dominant criteria.

The Army’s own lab showed that 40 S&W had significantly greater stopping power than 9mm and yet went with SIG’s 9mm over the Glock 23.

    2) The SIG is fatter –Glock is 1.18 in wide whereas I’ve seen SIG 320’s width given as 1.4in although SIG claims an “overall width” of 1.3 in.

  4. I have a Glock 21 and although it’s good and reliable and simple, it has always left a lot to be desired. I’ll take my Sig 1911 over the Glock any day of the week, much more accurate and even if I run out of bullets I can always beat em over the head with it, or drive nails, the Glock, not so much All boils down to preference…..

  5. To bad you couldn’t have received the Glock 45 at the same time. Except for two differences, that I can see, it is essentially a 19X only the standard all black.

  6. Pat: I will ask you again to test the very affordable ($200) and reliable Taurus G2C in either 9mm or 40 caliber! It is my EDC gun, as it meets all my parameters for self-defense. Please share your review so that all Americans can know this great value in a firearm!!

  7. Did Springfield enter any of the XD model pistols? I have a .40 and .45 caliber in both and a Glock 22 as well. I must say I REALLY like my Glock but I also really like the XD’s and they come standard with ambidextrous mags, beaver tail safety etc and generally are pretty tough.

I also like the round indicator by feel on the top of the slide something I don’t have on my Glock.

So just wondering as I like the XD’s and they are pretty inexpensive to boot.

    1. Competitors were Beretta, CZ, FN Herstal, Glock, KRISS, Sig Sauer, Smith& Wesson, STI/Detonics

Failing to compete is not a negative, in my opinion. Army RFP had a lot of additional (expensive) requirements to meet US procurement processes/ bureaucracy rules. Ruger decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.

    2. Roger,

Myself, I own and shoot both Springfield Xdm pistols (9mm, Xdm 3.8 & .45 ACP) and Glocks (19X & G45). Only recently have I been converted to Glock sidearms due to the introduction of their 19X.

Regarding the Springfield XD/Xdm series….they are a fabulous firearm. Their Xdm 9, 3.8 is essentially the same style pistol as the G19X & G45; shorter slide on full-length grip using a standard 19 round magazine ! This pistol introduced to the USA market circa 2013.

As you noted the XD/Xdm series has match barrels, ambidextrous mag releases, a loaded chamber indicator on slide top along with a cocked, striker indicator at the backend of the slide. Both of these indicators being highly visible along with the ability to determine cocked/chamber status simply by touch. Oh, and did I mention standard iron sights as opposed to Glock plastic sights ?

However, I prefer my G19X over any other pistol for several reasons:

      1. The 19X/G45 is the best fitting pistol to my hands I have ever used (with large beavertail backstrap installed).
      2. Maintenance and parts replacement is very simple.
      3. The multitude of aftermarket parts, add-ons, magazines and holsters (IWB & OWB).

IMO the Glock pistols are as popular as they are due to their quality, mechanical simplicity and Glock’s extensive MARKETING ! Springfield Armory has an exceptional performer in the XD/Xdm series pistols when compared to the out-of-box, stock Glock. What Springfield Armory has failed to do is to market their product sufficiently.

My suggestion is for shooters to test fire an XD or Xdm. Borrow or rent one. You should find the Springfield as good as the Glock, if not better.

  8. I’ve carried the sig p220 and sig 226 for about ten years now and love them both. That being said bought the glock model 45 to be standard with my prepping buddy (mags only) and found it to be an excellent firearm that was half the price of my sigs. Your article was well written and while I haven’t fed it any black hills ammo, it also feeds well. I think the glock points a little better than my sigs, and it shoots very nicely. Thank you for the article

  9. Pat- Very nice review as always. I have a GEN 5 19 and really like it. The only issue I have with your review, and it is admittedly not about the 19X is your statement about the FBI being “ the premier law enforcement agency in the world “. Really? The agency that thought Arabic guys in a flight school for large airliners but didn’t want to know how to land them was not worth looking into ( see 9/11 results of that brilliant line of deductive investigative work ), the agency that totally botched the Miami 1986 shootout, the guys that shot and killed a pregnant woman WITHOUT due process on Ruby Ridge in 1993 ( Vicki Weaver ) and most recently allegations, supported by email that certain FBI upper personnel were actively supporting an anti – Trump agenda. So although the FBI is very good with physical evidence I am very suspicious of their political affiliations and their commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of the American public.

    1. The FBI did get James Woods(actor) off the plane before it was hijacked. They also made sure all evidence was destroyed at a crime scene and destroyed all video at the most surveiled place on earth(pentagon). Just more examples of the political animal FDR unleashed on you and me led by a crossdressing, paranoid, democrat, blackmailer.
