RE: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I had six uncles in the Pacific. One died there on Saipan. Had we had to invade the mainland of Japan, more likely would have died. So I’m not sorry we used the A-Bomb. It saved a lot of American lives (and likely even more Japanese ones).
The Japanese had already surrendered(ask the Swiss they handled the negotiations) but we refused — to allow us to demonstrate our new weapon to the Russians that Truman had bragged to Stalin about at Yalta. The second bomb was a confirmation that it wasn’t a one shot deal. The Tokyo fire bombings were war crimes by any definition and we may soon be subjected to similar acts with the same justifications.

The bombing was a huge favor and benefit to Japan. By their own estimates it saved 20 million Japanese lives. The Japanese military was totally committed to fight to the end to protect the motherland and had already begun inducting children and old men to defend the island.
