Little is written online or in most prepper books about septic systems or buckwheat.
I have septic and it is GREAT! about every 6-7 years I pay $200 to get it emptied, far less than a sewer bill and the drain field helps water trees, bushes. I see nearby homes with sewer and there are times when rain is needed yet my plants seem happy while others are suffering.
Buckwheat is very healthy, easy to cook, stores well and is a super substitute for rice or potatoes. I add beef bullion or olive oil…try it!
Don’t miss out on barley. Cook a rice dish with half barley and half white rice. Typically the barley should be soaked for a few hours first and at my altitude it really need a little more cooking time than the rice. But it’s worth it. If you use a rice cooker just follow the directions like it was all rice but put the barley in first;
For example: 1/2 cup barley, 1/2 cup rice, 2 cups water, a little salt.
Put the presoaked barley and all the water in, run it for 10 minutes. Then add the rice and let it finish. Some experimentation required because I have two rice cookers and one of them cooks off the water faster so I need 2 1/4 cups of water with that one.
We lost some very fine people that day. May they rest in peace.
