Our battalion officers conducted a staff ride of the battlefield long ago, after a prairie fire removed much of the sagebrush, and a subsequent archeological investigation with intensive ballistics study had been completed. It was fascinating to see where the piles of shells were located, and where the indians had been using weapons captured during the fight to continue their combat. There were even a few slugs which showed had been pried out of one caliber cartridge and rammed into a muzzle loading rifle to fire at the army. The study also had just discovered a soldier’s skeleton buried at the Reno-Benteen site south of the main battlefield. The piles of shells, and the incoming bullets found, gave a good picture of the battlefield’s events.
