Is mercenary the right word for regular soldiers who were sent by their goverment?
Hessians were not sent “by their govt.” They were paid mercenaries from the state of Hesse, later a Grand Duchy at the time of Napoleon. German. Paid for with royal money from England. King George used them and paid them because, technically, whatever atrocities committed by them in the colonies could be played off as, “hey, they’re not really OUR guys, just paid mercenaries, and none of what they did sticks to us”. Of course the reality is that where ever they wound up, they did what they wanted. They acted as terrorists for the Crown against colonials, pillaging, raping, and burning to discourage colonials from actively working against the British. It might have helped to name the date of that occurrence, 1778, when put on the masthead, boss. Dec. 1777 George Washington and Co. captured nearly a thousand Hessian mercenaries at Trenton in a surprise attack. America: We attack at dawn on Christmas because that’s the way we roll.
AFAIK the “hessians” were soldiers rented by their goverment(Prince of Hesse Kassel) to King George, and his goverment.
Which sent them to the colonies, where they did take part in the war.
The British had to hire mercenaries because they were fighting two wars(rebellions)at the same time and decided India was a greater prize and sent more resources to hold in to it.
