The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of the Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods – a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper.

Social Unrest

Many of our readers took notice when we posted the link to Arizona’s John Brown Gun Club. The irony was in the “fake” rifles that many carried as an open-carry protest. Today, SurvivalBlog reader B.B. updated us on their progress. Apparently, they were offended at being caught carrying toys under the guise of open-carry, so this time they posted a video of their range practice [1]. I know they are trying to show how mean and tough they are, but it’s hard not to laugh. They really seem to want to pick a fight though.

Reader P.S. sent in this link from All Outdoor on dangerous gangs when the SHTF [2]. I tend to agree with the author. I know that there are alot of quality officers out there, but I also know that ethics are already out the window and we are just barely managing to stay civilized. When pushed over the brink, the uniform is a symbol of power. It’s not even that they are bad people (though they may be). If you dehumanize the target, they think they are doing the right thing.

Traditional Skills

Reader G.G. sent in this link on the activity of the brain when you are using GPS [3]. Becoming to dependent on a GPS device really does impair your ability to think. How are your map reading skills? Do you even have maps in your car or home? If your survivalist preps are short in this area you might want to check these SurvivalBlog articles out:

  1. Letter: Road Maps [4]
  2. Three Letters Re: Road Maps [5]
  3. Even More Letters Re: Paper Road Maps [6]

Personal Safety

Do you think you are safe on public transportation? Reader T.P. sent in this link to a PDF of the report from the NTSB [7] on the DC Metro train derailment in Virginia. Pay particular attention to the pictures on page three and four of the report. The track gauge width is visually out of specification. Given the circumstances, how would you prepare for this unknown?

Prepping

What do you do when your spouse doesn’t see eye to eye with you about prepping? How do you go off grid, prepare for a disaster, and learn survival skills when your spouse doesn’t want to. Brad, from FullSpectrumSurvival has posted a video [8] where him and his wife Kelly discuss this very topic.

Weapons

Reader D.B. informed us of Ruger’s Silent-SR ISB [9] (Integrally Suppressed Barrel). The march towards normalizing suppressed weapons continues with this rimfire barrel assembly for the 10/22 and Charger platforms. I want one!

I only wish your new format would spawn a new tab or window when “continue reading” is selected.

(I would also like an option of buying the archive without using e-commerce.)

If you have a standard mouse, clicking the mouse wheel will open the link in a new tab.

Don’t we wish! Actually, it’s a view down one of the aisle of [11] in Sun Valley, California. We thought it visually described the concept of Odds ‘n Sods rather well 🙂

It looks like a shoe store after they throw one of their buy one get one free sales.
