Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest news items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. Most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor, JWR [1]. Today, we look at Bidenflation. (See the Inflation Watch section.)

Inflation Watch:

As a glimpse of the effects of Bidenflation, I just heard this from a mid-level employee at a publicly-traded mid-size electronics manufacturing company in Washington state: “We’ve reported less than 2% net profits in the last quarter, despite above-average order volume. Historically we run at a 10% net margin. Our company leadership plans to pursue aggressive price increases in the new year, to recoup this.”

The Blame Game finger-pointing begins: Food suppliers blame inflation for price hikes. Lawmakers say they’re padding the bill [12].

JWR’s Comments: Senator Pocahontas must be reminded: Most chain supermarkets are presently operating at lower profit margins than they were a year ago [13]. The statists in congress are displaying the same mentality that is common in centrally-planned authoritarian countries, where retailers get blamed by governments for inflation that was created by those governments. Most recently, this has happened in Turkey [14], with price controls slapped on grocery stores. But price controls date back to the French Revolution [15]. Historically, the end result of price controls is almost always the same: shortages. Stock up early, long before there are shortages. That way you’ll be one less shopper, in the coming retail crisis.
