The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”.  Today, we focus on The Greek Dark Age.

Flood Stage!

Please pray for the folks who are in the flood zones on the Missouri Rivver– particularly in Iowa and between Nebraska City and St. Joseph, Missouri. This looks severe!

Asteroid Impact Implications

What if an asteroid was about to hit Earth? Scientists ponder question. This article is a simplistic introductory piece. But it is encouraging to see the asteroid threat is being seriously considered by scientists.

Real EMP Effects on Vehicles

Finally, a scientist has published a definitive piece: EMP Effects on Vehicles. The report’s bottom line: Most vehicle electronics will only experience a transitory “latch up.” However, widespread fuel shortages caused by EMP taking down power grids and refineries will eventually bring most vehicles to a halt.

Study: Some Sun Exposure is a Good Thing

At Dr. Mercola’s site: Sun Avoidance Is a Major Cause of Mortality. A snippet:

For every skin cancer death in northern Europe, 60 to 100 people die from stroke or heart disease related to high blood pressure, which is strongly associated with vitamin D deficiency, and a lack of sun exposure in particular.

The Greek Dark Age & Climate Change

Martin W. Armstrong drew some interesting conclusions: The Greek Dark Age & Climate Change. Here isa quote:

“What is most interesting is the fact that they do not connect the dots which are so glaring for that period of time. The Bronze Age Collapse was a Dark-Age in the Near East, Asia Minor, Aegean region, North Africa, Caucasus, Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. This encapsulated the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age, which was violent, sudden, and a major setback for civilization as a whole. We seem to focus on the fall of Rome, but not the catastrophic collapse of the Bronze Age.

The political economy of city-states that dominated the Aegean region and Anatolia region (Modern Turkey), simply disintegrated much like Rome whereby people abandoned cities and formed small isolated village during the Greek Dark Age. This takes place about 51.6 years following the cultural collapse of the Mycenaean kingdoms, of the Kassite dynasty of Babylonia, of the Hittite Empire in Anatolia and the Levant, and of the Egyptian Empire. We also see the political-economic destruction of Ugarit and the Amorite states in the Levant. Over in the Luwian states of western Asia Minor, we also see a collapse in civilization. There was also a period of tremendous political-economic chaos in Canaan (Israel). This wholesale collapse of all of these city-states resulted in the collapse of trade routes as we saw with the collapse of Rome. This also manifests in the reduction of literacy in much of the known world.”

Google Facilitating Warrantless Searches?

Reader G.P. spotted this: Google May Be Helping U.S. Government Conduct Warrantless Searches. The article begins:

“One of the core underpinnings of U.S. society is that all individuals are protected from unlawful search and seize of their private property. This concept is enshrined in the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which specifically requires law enforcement officials to obtain a warrant from a court in order to conduct a search of any private property. For that reason, it’s especially troubling that Silicon Valley search giant Google may be involved in helping law enforcement officials evade this responsibility. In fact, according to the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), Google is actually helping the U.S. government conduct warrantless searches.

In an amicus brief filed with the United States Supreme Court, EPIC suggested that Google might be actively helping law enforcement officials bypass the Fourth Amendment in order to conduct warrantless searches. From a civil liberties perspective, Google’s involvement is worrisome because it means that the right to avoid a “digital search” of one’s property is being violated. One would never allow a “physical search” of one’s property without a warrant, so why should a digital search by Google be allowed?”

Oroville Dam is Leaking Again

A hat tip to H.L. for sending this: Oroville Dam Leaking Again. An excerpt:

“The $1.1 billion spent to repair Oroville Dam is failing as water is seeping through the rebuilt spillway threatens new mass evacuations over the risk of the dam collapsing.

According to national dam expert Scott Cahill of Watershed Services of Ohio, Oroville Dam is on the same failure track as in 2017, with visible water seepage trickling from the foot of the dam and dozens of points along the dam’s principal spillway.”

Why Did the Anaconda Cross the Road?

We’ll close today’s column with this oddity: Traffic Comes to a Halt As Anaconda Crosses Highway.

  1. Vehicles were made resistant after some police found out the hard way that a truck with a large enough linear would cause their cars to stall.

Same with driving near an airport and being hit by the radar.

A big enough EMP can take out anything, but it depends on a lot of things including obstacles and the inverse square law. Would they fry San Francisco or Lake Bonnevile?

  2. Two points on EMP and vehicles. The EMP Commission used a maximum pulse strength of 50Kv/m during their tests.

I’ve seen reports that the Russians have a 200 Kv/m weapon to overcome shielding built to the 50Kv/m standard.

Pre-electronic vehicles (1970s) are your best bet.
