Utah Bans Warrantless Access to the Cloud

Reader DSV spotted this: Signed as Law: Utah Bans Warrantless Access to Information in the Cloud. Here is how the article begins:

“Last week, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a bill into law that requires police to get a warrant before accessing data stored in the “cloud.” The new law will not only increase privacy protections in Utah; it will also hinder the federal surveillance state.

Rep. Craig Hall (R-West Valley City) sponsored House Bill 57 (HB57). The new law prohibits law enforcement agencies from accessing electronic information or data transmitted to a “remote computing service” without a warrant based on probable cause in most situations. In effect, it will prohibit police from warrantlessly accessing information uploaded into the “cloud.”

The House passed HB57 by a 71-0 vote. The Senate approved the measure 23-0. With Herbert’s signature, the new law will go into effect May 14.

HB57 does provide some exceptions to the warrant requirement that will allow law enforcement agencies to obtain location information in the event of an emergency involving an imminent risk to an individual of death, serious physical injury, sexual abuse, live-streamed sexual exploitation, kidnapping, or human trafficking; or if a remote computing service inadvertently discovers information that appears to pertain to the commission of a felony, or of a misdemeanor involving physical violence, sexual abuse, or dishonesty. It also allows police to access stored or transmitted data from an electronic device, or electronic information or data transmitted by the owner of the electronic information or data to a remote computing service under a judicially recognized exception to the warrant requirement, or in connection with a report forwarded by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children under 18 U.S.C. Sec. 2258A.”

How Much Land for Self-Sufficiency?

Here is a recent post from Tara Dodrill’s well-established Homestead Survival Site: How Much Land Does It Take To Be Completely Self-Sufficient? Here is an excerpt:

“We own 56 acres of land, yet we are not entirely self-sufficient and do have to leave in order to meet some of our needs. That much acreage sure seems like enough land for a family to live on… if it boasts the right features.

Our survival homesteading retreat has a natural spring, a pond, a clear and running creek that has never gone dry in nearly three years, and a well. I say we can firmly put a check in the water resources column.

The property has great dirt thanks to all the livestock that have lived on it for the past 100 years or so. We have ample gardening space, a nutrient compost pile, raised beds and container gardening areas, and a greenhouse. All dirt is not created equal, so we are blessed and can put a check in the food cultivation column as well.

We grow in multiple locations both indoor and out to avoid having our entire crop wiped out by an insect infestation, flooding, drought, or inclement weather. It might seem like it would take a ton of space to garden this way, but it can be done on less than an acre if you grow vertically, use containers, and perhaps enclose a porch and turn it into a solar-powered greenhouse.

People need protein in order to remain strong and survive. Another check in the food cultivation column for us. We raise chickens, ducks, and goats, so there is a constant supply of meat, eggs, and milk. We have space ready for cattle and rabbits and have moved them to the top of the prepping budget this year.”

  1. re:
    the newest Utah ‘law’

Is any intellectual property safe from Law Enforcement Officials if stored off-site? Probably not. I instantly thought of non-Law Enforcement Officials hired by Law Enforcement Officials or other government agents… or malicious non-government agents. Or the government agents we employ in the Federal Bureau Of Investigations or the Department Of Justice.

Is the latest ‘law’ an example of ‘magician sleight of hand’? Mis-direction?

Fortunately, some people are exempt from the newest ‘law’. LaVoy Finicum. Sammy and Vickie Weaver. Seventy-six members of the Branch Dravidian church.

  2. Re: John Bolton
4,563 Americans have given their lives in Iraq. Yet the Trump White House Swamp Creature who pushed America into Iraq still has “NO REGRETS” about doing so. And Bolton will have no regrets in Venezuela.

When was the last time you heard American Christians ask, ‘What would Jesus do?’ That’s how far the nation has fallen.

    1. Please tell me which of the Trump White Swamp Creatures were in the White house in the years from 2003 ( the start of the Iraq War) until his inauguration in 2017. According to Stastista (https://www.statista.com/statistics/263798/american-soldiers-killed-in-iraq/) 4,383 U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq from 2003 through 2016. Only 28 have been killed during the Trump presidency. Any loss of life for the U.S. military members is regrettable, but put the responsibility where it belongs.

As for Venezuela, any country that would stop ALL humanitarian aid from entering the country, by force, is setting itself up for a revolution.

      1. John Bolton is part of the problem. He was intimately involved in the US wars from 2001 on. Again, he is a serious NeoCon, a socialist. No different than the Stalinist Communists or the Hitlerite National Socialists of the last century, or for that matter, the modern Democratic Socialists in the US. This is a God awful evil man. So, yes, he’s a bad guy and should not be supported.

As for Venezuela, what do you expect? Maduro has been asking for humanitarian aid, but he wants it from the UN, not from the United States.
Maduro is a communist, that would be an International Socialist. Like all socialists, he only cares to retain power over his own people. His power is more important than the people of Venezuela being fed. Oh gee, just like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Liz Warren, and all the rest. Have you listened to those lunitics? Another failed socialist dictatorship coming to the western hemisphere, only this time in our America.

        1. Calling John Bolton a ‘socialist’ is ignorance beyond belief. A hawk ? Yes. A militarist ? Maybe. Is he wrong on certain issues ? I believe he is. But a ‘socialist’ ? You are letting your prejudices and bias run wild and make you look foolish. If you are going to call someone names, at least be accurate.

          1. Not ignorance at all. John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, Elliot Abrams are all neo conservatives. Exactly like their neo liberal counterparts, they are progressives. All progressives are exactly the opposite of what the name implies, they are regressive, suppressive, depressive, repressive and oppressive. While were at it, add Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Jared Kushner to that list. There are many many more. Like their neo liberal counterparts, they actually hate Donald Trump, or did you not pay attention prior to the 2016 election. I’d like to have been a fly on the wall when the force was applied to Trump to get him to sign on all these neocons, people who prior to the election had endorsed Hillary Clinton, she fit right in with them.

All neocons, like their neolib counterparts, are progressives. All progressives are socialists, of one kind or another (globalist, fascist, communist, Nazi).

Am I ignorant, hardly. Am I prejudiced and biased against war mongering totalitarian socialists, absolutely. Am I foolish, no. Am I accurate, absolutely. We have to stop our naive willingness to believe the selfsame people who are aggressively, diligently working to destroy our liberty.

You may notice I did not say they are working to destroy our freedom. Freedom is something granted by your masters, in this case by your government. Liberty is a human right, granted by God, simply because we are human, and His creation.

  3. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding
his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
    [KJV from today’s SurvivalBlog.]

I was reading another site about another situation, but with ~similar advice. I’m quoting that site, because it is a spot-on observation, about today’s world. =
… “Good words are dime a dozen. If they are not accompanied by good actions they are worthless. In fact the difference between a great man and a conman is in how much their word and deed differ. ~ Even Obama came to power by giving good talks. His entire life however he befriended conmen, terrorists and hateful people. Demagogy is the domain of all charlatans and they are good at it.”

  4. AMD is a ‘framework” to DEVELOP a system, hopefully by 2028. Like its predecessor, the Patriot, it will have a pretty small foot print of defendable area. Also note that it will possibly defend “valuable assets” in the homeland. Vast areas, such as where you live, are not “valuable assets”. Command and control centers, leadership, etc…..THOSE are ‘valuable assets’. You’re still on your own.
US airspace is a veritable sieve when it comes to air defense. Russian air space is quite the opposite, and the US Air Force knows it can’t penetrate it without horrendous losses. Even with a robust air defense system, Russia still deploys a vast civil defense system, most recently exercised in October 2016 in a four day exercise involving 40 million civilians, 100,000 civil defense personnel, and 50,000 mass transit vehicles. That’s no small investment. Not bad for just a “regional power”, as Barrack called them.

While some point to the German kid who flew a Cessna into Red Square, he was intercepted several times by Russian MIGs and only the hesitation to issue the shoot-down order by the air defense commander saved him. That commander was sacked and the fighter pilot who shot down Korean Air 007 was put in charge, obviously because he knew how to do the job.

The German and Japanese populations were assured that no bomb would ever reach their homelands. It didn’t quite work out that way.

    1. Your right Paul. Also, besides technology, it takes political leaders willing to ~use the technology to defend America. That’s where we have to make wise voting decisions.
… … People should also look to SurvivalBlog advertisers for a few needed supplies, for what could be a precarious future for the USA.

There are plenty of articles about the future of ‘Kinetic Bombardment’ ~ Wikipedia has such an article. Tungsten Rods are ‘dropped’ from outer-space, and emulates a meteor strike. It would be easy to send a country back to an 1800s economy. Without radiation contamination, conquest of valuable land and resources is easier.

Trump now has a Space Force. … Trump, supposedly, has a secret program to also sabotage Iran’s missile program. Clinton sold ‘missile technology’ to China. Obama ~gave billions of dollars to Iran.
Plus, Obama reached a ‘deal’ to allow Iran to develop ‘peaceful’ nuclear technologies. ~ Trump withdrew from the ‘deal’ ~ but, the cash-giveaway was a ~done deal [Iran will not give the money back].

A kinetic weapon from outer-space is very feasible. It just takes missile technology along with good computers.
Unfortunately, there are a lot people, that think there are too many people in the world [it’s taught in USA public schools].
Many of the people concerned about ‘over’ population are also willing to sanction the killing of living babies. When things like that happen ~nobody is safe from the evil people.

TINVOWOOT – There Is No Voting Our Way Out of This

  6. Re: Utah HB57 – Good on Utah for taking action on reducing the uncontrolled power of the police state. With their House and Senate vote I’d say it’s a lock. I have issues with most anyone that would keep any information of any kind somewhere not in their control. I realize that in this day and age of electronic everything it’s practically impossible to keep info out of prying hands. The only way to keep stuff safe is to keep it physically under your control. Anything not under your direct control is susceptible to hacking and or theft by almost everyone….

  7. GGHD has a good point about the “overpopulation culture”. We met some of these folks who wanted NBC shelters, but loved the idea of culling three fourths of the population or more. These people are much like the Mullahs who advocate followers sending their children to blow themselves up in Jihad, but never seem to get around to doing it themselves or sending their own children. We turned down their business.
The Rod From God technology is a ways off, and “they” already have the means to depopulate North America without breaking a window: EMP and biological weapons…or leave out the BW s if you like. Fallout is not a big deal overseas if we are the only ones that get clobbered. US fallout in Europe would be negligible. There’s no reason for our near-peers to rush in here…they’ll be busy unwrapping their new possessions in the Pacific and Europe, and can leave us for a decade or so before venturing over.
It’s no longer difficult to see the good and evil anymore.
There is nothing on the board that brings a glimmer of hope in the last 40 years. The US nuclear deterrent is ancient and getting older by the day, while our real enemies have revamped their systems. Their systems are survivable, and ours….aren’t.
