The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”.  Today, we focus on the Nebraska floods.

Nebraska Floods

Still near the top of the news cycle: Historic floods hit Nebraska after ‘bomb cyclone’ storm. A selection from the Reuters article:

“The National Weather Service predicted dangerous flooding would continue through the weekend in Nebraska and in south and west central Iowa, particularly along the Missouri River.

‘We’re still in a very widely dispersed and intense flooding situation in the eastern third of Nebraska,”’said Mike Wight, a spokesman for the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, in a phone interview.

Nebraska has had two flood-related fatalities this week, Wight said. One person died at home after failing to evacuate, although the exact cause of death was unclear, authorities said, and the other was swept away while trying to tow a trapped car with his tractor.”

10 Years in Prison for Possessing Mosque Shooting Video?

Sometimes censorship is downright counterproductive: NZ Threatens 10 Years In Prison For ‘Possessing’ Mosque Shooting Video; Web Hosts Warned, ‘Dissenter’ Banned.  JWR Adds: It is gruesome to watch, but a copy has been made available over at the Charles Carroll Society web site. Federal Red Flag Gun Confiscation Law Looming

Debate on a Federal  “Red Flag” law is expected to begin on March 26th, 2019.  Please contact both of the U.S. Senators that represent your state and remind them this bill (and any  similar state-level laws) would violate the Due Process clause of the  U.S. Constitution. This proposed law must be stopped!

Total Chaos in Maracaibo

H.L. sent this: “This Country Has Gone To Hell”: Total Chaos In Venezuelan Oil Capital After Blackout

Here is a key quote:

“The looting started last Saturday afternoon after an ice company, on a hot day, demanded that it be paid in dollars. A crowd instead tore through its factory and then continued onto nearby pharmacies and stores. By the evening, the entire city was taken over by people seeking out life’s necessities by any means necessary.

The country’s blackout took an already flammable situation and threw a match on it. Maduro’s handling of the situation has prompted the U.S. and other nations to instead recognize opposition leader Juan Guaido as the rightful head of state. Maduro has concentrated his power, in the form of resources and troops, in Caracas, the country’s capital. But the recent chaos in Maracaibo, a city of 1.6 million, shows the rest of the country is in tumult and not even the largest cities are safe.

Maduro blamed the blackout on a U.S. cyberattack last week.

When power was restored, many transformers and substations wound up bursting into flames. There were long lines of people at water trucks, streams and burst pipes. As far as protection, “a single municipal squad car was seen” during a day of looting in the city – and the officers within warned that “no protection” was on its way.”

The Autocrat’s New Tool Kit

At The Wall Street Journal: The Autocrat’s New Tool Kit.  “The next generation of repressive technology will make past efforts to spread propaganda and quash dissent look primitive.”

Videos of rehearsals for blockbuster ‘Massacre 2019’ motion picture production

Do the crisis actors patiently chat while the make-up crew costumes them with ‘massive head wounds’?
Do the crisis actors casually use their telephones after ‘multiple GSWs’ ravage their bodies?
Do the crisis actors stand around while the stage managers and director position the actors on their marks?

    Bravo! A job well-done!

  2. I live in eastern Nebraska and I wonder if people really realize what is going on here.
Our governor estimates that over a million calves have been lost (this does not include their mothers), and just trying to go east on a major highway (US 77) is impossible. There are so many bridges and roads washed out that we cannot even fathom how much it will cost to fix everything. In Omaha 1/3 of the Air Force base was under water. Arable land cannot be planted causing many farmers not to be able to lose a whole year of income.
Sewage and water in basements will cause many buildings to be inhabitable (notwithstanding the mold problem that will exist). A friend of mine who tried to get through to her parents’ home told me that dead rabbits, squirrels, deer, and other wildlife are stacked along roads.
Suffering? Yes. But are we resilient? Yes, indeed. We are not called the heartland for no reason.
Through prepper groups, I know of other families in the flood zone that have lost practically everything. How can we prep for something like this? I do know, however, that faith and brotherhood will get us through.

    1. Our hearts go out to you. There are some really wonderful people in your State. Your region is one of the largest producers of food in our country.
Instead of meddling in other country’s business, maybe the Feds could invest in our country first. Some how I don’t think this on the horizon.
Look at the recovery of the past disasters and how slow people were able to recover here in the U.S.
Trump said we are going to update our infrastructure and the only thing we got was video cameras and more police state.

No bridges, storm drainages, real forest management, updated roads (unless digital signs and cameras). and so on.
For example Glenwwood Canyon is falling apart and it is a tunnel system.
Don’t worry other countries are spending more on infrastructure than military.

To get us out of these wars Trump scaled back domestic spending and has spent more on the military than ever. Our country is so backwards. We could produce so much (good) food as a weapon and help our bread basket, than shed blood with our I.C’s, Military and Medical and Pharma industries, and surveillance state. Now that would be security for us and for them. Keep buying those apples from Fiji and New Zealand.

      1. C., you speak for me. Military budget waste is horrendous. I read a report on the cronyism that has led to the greatest number of general officers in history. Then, their retirement benefits are more of our money.

Spend our money for farmers, soil remediation, and raising real food. The Land Stewardship Project is doing great work in this area, and doing it on a shoestring.

        Carry on

    2. Praying for you, Libby. We have been hearing about the devastation, and I’m hearing from my farming family in Iowa — far from the flooded area — that ag markets are reacting to the anticipated loss of planting. We’ll keep thinking of you. Hang in there!

  3. You can take New Zealand off my places to visit list. Do they actually think that in this day and age you can sensor a news event from the world? This is typical liberal wishful thinking. It would be like destroying Nazi death camps and pretending nothing happened. Bad parts of history must be preserved to serve as lessons for future generations to remind them of man’s inhumanity so we can learn from past mistakes. Giving an event the ostrich treatment is futile and counter productive. Rewriting history, censorship, bans, and bad laws are the tools of an oppressive government that lives it life in fear of it’s subjects. Yes, I use the term subjects as that is how most governments view the population, our own is becoming a pretty good example of a few at the top believing they know best how we should live our lives in servitude to their ideals while under their thumb. I find it rather sad how many feel it is ok to give up your rights for a little bit of feel good ineffective security schemes produced by the C- students that we call politicians who are elected without a single accomplishment to their name.

  4. I think it is apt that the Midwest floods are mentioned and right after that it is portable water filters. Flood waters almost always contain raw sewage and if your well is not completely capped, your well can be contaminated. Also most portable water filters do not remove any viruses, something to keep in mind if using flood water.

I suggest building on high ground!(if there is any in your area) I have seen an awful lot of 500 year floods in the last several years all across the USA.

    1. I thought Canada was already at that point. Am I mistaken? I was under the impression that Canada allows only bolt action rifles and hunting-type shotguns.

  5. I was in south Nebraska last week with my prepper 85YO mom. She never would use the term, but has always been that way.

Last week we saw the snows, melts, violent rainstorms, and more snows and flooding from all that. Roads and towns were getting flooded back on March 13th.

Community response was awesome to shelter and feed evacuees, establish op centers, and then cleanup.

Even better are the anonymous folks who go into the little mom and pop businesses to hand over a stuffed envelope to help the small businesses stay alive.

I got a steal of a bargain when I got 8 candy bars for a couple hundred bucks but a few others gave far more than me to one tiny store I know of.

Insurance might help a little, but in those old historic buildings most water heaters, electrical panels, and refrigeration compressors were in the ruined basements.

Investing now to help is about fighting to keep folks in communities with solid values like self sufficiency, 2A, and much more. Help prevent urban drift.

What I got for the price of a cheap kit gives me far more joy and happiness with God Almighty, knowing that I followed his intent to help those in need.

    God Bless

  6. Why Are White Men Stockpiling Guns?

Why Are White Men Stockpiling Guns?

    1. Every time I read about new proposed gun restrictions it makes me want to buy another gun or more ammo. Don’t you?

I think it’s a reaction, consciously or subconsciously, to increasing government control (in the form of gun control) over our lives. By asserting our rights, we deny that others have control over us.

  7. Speaking of skepticism, I don’t trust the US govt. officials involved with what is going on in Venezuela. Eliot Abrams is not a good guy. He is literally a tried and convicted criminal. Since he was appointed by Mike Pompeo, Pompeo is seriously suspect as well. Throw in the extremest neo-con John Bolton, and the entire narrative from our government becomes seriously unbelievable.

I’ve seen the mainstream media videos of the burning “aid” truck. I’ve heard the narrative propaganda that it was the Venezuelan military that set fire to the truck. Then I see the complete video of one of the “protesters” actually throwing the Molotov cocktail that actually set the truck on fire. Our media says “nothing to see here, move along, move along”, including Fox News. I heard there was supposed to be hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan citizens storming the bridge to Colombia to let the aid trucks through. It turned out to be just a few hundred. Even the helpful Colombian government is pulling back their support, since there is apparently little enthusiasm from the Venezuelan people to change their government.

The US has a sorry history where Central and South America are concerned. We have staged regime change operation after regime change operation throughout the region. We don’t like a leader of a country, we stage a coup d’etat, and presto chango we see a new government “loyal” to us. From Honduras, to Guatamala, El Salvador (Elliot Abrams was tried and convicted over this one), Brazil, Chile, and the list goes on and on and on. Now it’s Venezuela. Oh and let’s not forget the ongoing regime change operation being staged against President Trump. We even have “never Trumpers” within the Trump administration today, Elliot Abrams and John Bolton to name just two.

I don’t what the US government choosing the leaders of any other country, any more than I would want some other country choosing our leaders. US interventionism has an immoral track record. So we depose a brutal communist dictator and install a brutal fascist dictator. I guess that is OK if you happen to like brutal fascist dictators, of which our government seems to have a particular fetish for. Believe me, Juan Guaido will become a brutal fascist dictator. He won’t be just an interim “President”, he’ll be permanent, elected for life, or at least until the next US rigged election in Venezuela.

As a side note: Have you noticed how FAT the “starving” citizens of Venezuela are. Those are not distended bellies you see, those are rolls of FAT, even on the kids. If we really want to help the “starving” people of Venezuela, end the US sanctions that have actually caused most of the hardships in the first place.

Maduro is a communist scumbag. Communism fails every time it’s tried, Communists are basically really stupid, ignorant people. Just look at the communists that are trying to stage a coup here. However, it is up to the citizens of Venezuela to replace him, not the US government, and certainly not with our tax dollars or our military.

    1. I have not seen a single fat Venezuela child. I’ve seen several of children starving to death. I’m not saying you are a liar but links would have been helpful. I too believe there is shady happenings behind the scenes but do not believe the people are not affected. They are caught in the middle and hopefully contrite of their choices for their country as well. Of course if the Us is behind the scenes there is nothing they could have done to prevent this other than full out revolution. At this point who or what would they be fighting for anyway? Mass confusion all around.

  8. There’s no better way to make me want to see/read/hear something than for someone to tell me I can’t. I do not tolerate censorship; while it may be appropriate for children, it is never appropriate for adults. Needless to say, I’m outraged that Facebook and Youtube won’t allow the New Zealand video to be seen. They’re making a decision for billions, and no institution or company has that right.

Thank you for posting the link to the Charles Carroll Society page. I did watch the video and it was sickening. However, I believe it has a crucial lesson for all preppers. A terrorist attack is a scenario we should think about and prepare for, but how? This video convinced me that the only way to be prepared for such an attack is to be armed and adept at shooting in response to an attack. Those poor people were, as we used to say, “sitting ducks”, “rats in a barrel”. The only feasible defense was a gun.

You may get some criticism for posting this link; if so, just think of it as water off the duck’s back. The value of the video is its proof that gun control doesn’t stop evil people.

    1. Autistic Prepper, I disagree with you here.

      To quote a fine man:
“Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.”–Jeff Cooper.

Few who are armed are adept at shooting.

What is required is character. I read two news reports that a furniture dealer in the second mosque picked up a credit card processing machine and threw it at the gunman, who retreated. The man then picked up the shotgun the shooter dropped and threw it like a spear through the gunman’s car window. Apparently the killer planned more mayhem judging from the pipe-bombs in his vehicle.

Character, the will to act. And, to press the attack. This necessarily precedes being armed.

There are many answers to violence besides the “ballistic solution”. Having been trained by skilled people to be a killer, I saw that as the only approach for a long time. I have learned over the years that many people have disarmed attackers without shooting or killing them.

I remain curious about any and every means to respond to assault and act effectively in defense of innocent lives.

      Carry on

  10. I used to live in Eastern Nebraska, and I still have a friends and family in the area. The descriptions of the damage are impressive. I purchased a lot of ground beef today and some cuts of pork, as I’m sure prices will rise in the near future. I keep my freezers full out of habit, and I’m grateful for my parents who raised me that way. It is just like having money in the bank.

  11. Speaking of Christchurch, I managed to snag a copy of that foul scumbag’s “manifesto”. It’s an interesting read. He’s wrong on so many fronts, but he’s just enough right to be really dangerous. In some ways it reads like a very truncated version of Mein Kampf. Crazy, but just enough right to be dangerous. Of course the leftest government in New Zealand is doing exactly what he predicted they would. If our government follows suit, then I would think his prediction for America will play itself out as well.

He describes himself as an ecofascist, praises the government of China, comes from both the far right and the far left at the same time. He’s racist for the sake of the environment, killing to save the planet. Like I said, crazy.

If you are interested, it can be found here:

By the way, he only mentions Trump once, both positive and negative in the same sentence.
