The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”.  Today, we focus on Constitutional Carry (aka: Permitless Concealed Carry.)

Kentucky Becomes 16th Constitutional Carry State

We’ll start out with some quite good news:  Matt Bevin to Sign Bill Making Kentucky 16th Permitless Carry StateJWR’s Comment:  The polarization of gun laws is becoming more pronounced.  Freedom-loving interior states are restoring firearms freedom. Constitutional Carry is a rising tide. But meanwhile the mostly coastal leftist Nanny states are restricting freedom with a panoply of new gun laws. I can see that if this this polarization continues, we will witness mass internal migrations between states–people voting with their feet. There will also be calls to partition more than a dozen states that have geographically-fractured politics.  (Such as partitioning eastern Washington–the proposed State of Liberty–and eastern Oregon from their leftist “Left Halves.”) The American Redoubt movement was just the beginning.

Advice on Hymer/Roadtrek  Sprinter RVs

A consulting client recently asked me for some advice on choosing a Sprinter style camping van. One of the vans that he was considering was a used Roadtrek brand van with lese than 70,000 miles on the odometer.  Because Hymer recently went into bankruptcy, I advised him to avoid any of its associated brands. These include: Hymer, Roadtrek, Carado, Axion, Banff, and Aktiv. This video describes all of the potential repair and warranty issues, in detail. For long term warranty and repair support, the Thor brand is probably a better choice. Note that any conversion to a Mercedes van must be done by an authorized Mercedes Master Upfitter. All others may have their warranty invalidated.

Private Transfer Ban Now Before The Senate

H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 passed the House and is now on the Senate calendar.  Please contact your sstate’s two U.S. Senators and insist that the Senate version of the bill (S. 42) gets stopped cold. The best way to kill it is to load it up with umpteen Killer Amendments.  Some that you could suggest: A full exemption for anyone with a concealed carry permit, and for anyone living in a state that does not require a concealed carry permit.  (Now 13 states, and soon to be 14 states have Constitutional Carry.) Also, changing the threshold of “antique” from its current arbitrarily-frozen date of “December 31, 1898” to a more fluid “more than 70 years old.”  (An amplification of a current bill that would set a 100 year threshold–which your Senators should be encourage to support.) Also, an exemption for any honorably-discharged veteran. Oh, and also an exemption for any firearm that has been out of interstate commerce for more than one year.  Together, those amendments should kill the bill in committee.

Spotting Your Local Sociopath

Reader H.L. suggested this instructive piece: The Difference Between a Psychopath and a Sociopath. Here is a brief quote:

“If a psychopath commits a crime, she’s likely to carefully plan it to minimize the chance of being caught, explains psychcentral.com; when a sociopath breaks the law, it’ll be on impulse, with little planning and no regard for the consequences. Understanding the differences between these two terms, however, is probably the least of your worries if you meet either a sociopath or a psychopath, according to Forrest Talley, PhD. Instead of defining the person, Dr. Talley recommends remembering that both are manipulative, lack remorse, disregard social norms, and hide things well.”

  1. Every member of my house has an AR and Glock bought through an ffl dealer. I’ve bought tons of ammo w my credit card through the mail. Is there really any sense in buying a rifle w no paper trail? I’ve done too much for too long to try to get smart now it seems.

    Am I wrong?

    1. What would the harm be of having object of any kind, that the people who want to steel then from you do not know about and the objects are keep in a different place from the ones they come into you home to steel?

    2. Huh? Of course you can! If for any reason something happens and your ‘traceable’ items are confiscated, it’s always good to have a Plan B with a couple of non-registered backups.

      Always.

  2. Q: Why is H.R. 8 on the Senate calendar?
A: Because Mitch McConnell put it there.
Q: Why would he do that?
A: Because he wants a vote on the bill to proceed.
Q: Does he usually put doomed bills up to vote?
    A: No.
Q: What does that tell you about Trump’s intentions regarding the bill?

  3. @Doublemountainman – Yes, you are wrong. “They” could discover your gun ownership status through numerous means – no point in denying that nor should you. It is a crime to lie to Federal officials. Your browsing history, location history, credit card purchases, NRA membership (I hope), all tell a clear story.

    1. It is a crime for us to lie to Federal officials but it is not a crime for them to lie to us.

What a pathetic, screwed up country we live in.

      Murica!!!!!!

  4. Since the Governor signed the mandatory background check law for private sales, some of these stalwart Sheriffs have started to waffle. Eddy county, where I live, has a Sheriff that has now backtracked and stated that the law is the law, and he will enforce it.

    1. People appear to forget that Sherriffs are politicians too, so I wouldn’t stock much faith in any promises. Many Sherriffs are talking big now, but I expect that will wilt quickly once charges or impeachments are brought forward.

      1. I’m not aware of any impeachment processes outlined in the Constitution for Sheriffs. Their primary loyalty is to the protection of their townships (counties), and have every right to uphold their oaths to the Constitution and refuse compliance with “laws” that defy that document.

  5. New Mexico has a dem governor and dems control both houses of state legislature. During the debates regarding gun control, the roundhouse was filled with pro 2nd amendment citizens. All they met with was closed minds. The governor (our illustrious Grisham) tweeted statements about ‘pity parties’, regarding these efforts, as well as the sanctuary counties. Nothing like government listening to the voice of the people. There is a clause in the state constitution that any law passed may be put to a vote if a minimum of 10% of the voting population petitions to do so. Signature collection is underway. And of course the dems immediatly started bad mouthing the effort. Lucky us…

  6. On the Civil War article, I appreciated what the author had to say. Yes, slavery was the heart and soul of it, the driving force behind all the other differences. A second civil war would be for the same reason. Forcibly taking wealth from those who do the work to gain it in order to give that wealth to those who don’t is the very definition of slavery.

I also really liked the article by Max Velocity. I have no disagreement at all with the article. It is dead-on for those who can do all that it recommends. However, not all of us with the same beliefs can train in hand to hand combat or firearms training to that level. I am old with many old physical injuries that flare up if I try to train that way. I am still working on strength and cardio training to improve and heal so far as I can. Many with the same mindset are living with physical disabilities, like being confined to a wheel chair for one example, that would prevent being able to do the same thing as the article mentions even with a warrior mindset.

I think of first Samuel 30:1-25. While David and his men were out fighting (hard core warriors all); all of their wives, children and belongings were carried off by enemies. 400 of the 600 men pursued, leaving behind 200 that were too weary to do so. The 400 who pursued were able to get it all back but many sported a real ‘tude towards the ones that stayed behind. David said in verse 23-24, “My brethren, you shall not do so with what the LORD has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us. For who will heed you in this matter? But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike.” In verse 25 it became a statute. One important lesson (among many) from this story is that if they had left some warriors behind to start with, nothing would have been carried off. Some of us who can’t go be fighters and warriors can still fill thqt part in different ways.

I would love to see another article; one that explores what those of us who cannot do what the fighters or warriors can do. Tactical support by those of us who can’t do what they do can enable them to do what they do best. (Hint hint to those who are interested in writing an article for the ongoing competition on this website.)

  7. What Does it Take to Start a Civil War?

All the things mentioned in this article are enough for me. We should already be at war. The longer we wait, the stronger the enemy gets. They are indoctrinating the young. Twisting their minds. Turning them into zombies.

If not now when? War is the only option left. Talking and voting has been tried, but the communists cheat. We probably haven’t had a really fair election in decades. Illegal’s are voting, now they want 16 year old’s to vote and felons just got the right to vote where I live. The game is fixed.

If we don’t raise up. We will all go down together.

    Better dead than red.

    1. DKL, Amen! to that. Sadly we remain clingers. We cling to Republicans. We cling to the idea of saving the whole US including land masses full of Commies. We cling to a system clearly designed to reduce us to absolute Despotism. We need a divorce. The only vote that ever mattered in history is that of secession. Demographic displacement is forever. Walk away from Sodoms. If they want a war we fight them in our time.

Hope lies in new republics with new borders? As a Redoubter I would welcome liberty-loving men and women in Alberta and BC. Alaska would be beneficial. Regaining liberty requires men and women to think like free people.

Ask yourself. How many more years do you think we will have the liberty to even have a conversation like this?

  8. Update from New Mexico:
    https://www.gunpowdermagazine.com/new-mexico-29-of-33-county-sheriffs-refuse-to-enforce-anti-2a-laws-24-counties-become-sanctuaries/?fbclid=IwAR3yj7zYgQDfHq_YnGF7M98VdRwmo2e8-DitfdmFuyWp4wPzaXiZ_EP8BFI

29 out of the 33 New Mexico Sheriffs agree that the rush to react to the violence by proposing controls on guns is ill conceived and is truly a distraction to the real problems proliferating violence in our counties and our state. We oppose Senate Bill 8 as it stands this bill does nothing to protect citizens and is unenforceable. We also oppose House Bill 83 as it violates due process and puts law enforcement in a more dangerous situation and does nothing to protect citizens. This bill could disarm the very people trying to defend their lives and personal property.

  9. “Civil War” is a species of Fourth Generational War [4GenWar]. It has already begun. This is neither a conflict between nation states nor regions of a single state. Rather, it is father against son; women against men; poor against rich; black against white; Christian against Muslim; socialists against Patriots; and so forth.

The first “battles” have already been fought, e.g. the Battle of Portland. The first casualties have already been incurred.

As always, it is only with hindsight that historians appreciate that critical events have started; before they are generally acknowledged and appreciated.

While the current war has not expanded sufficiently to dominate the news, it will continue to expand. There are NO social forces sufficiently strong and focused which are being, or could be, marshaled and applied to prevent the further expansion of this conflict.

The America of our youth has gone–the question which endures is: “What will the new America look like, and who will be sufficiently prepared and dedicated to survive the multitudes of 4GenWar. mini-battles swirling around us?”

  10. To: Jeff in CO

It’s easier to go to war and stay in war, than to not go to war, and live in servitude to the ruling elites for a life time, or having your children and grandchildren doing so. They take, and take, and take and give nothing in return but more liberty sucking laws, frustration, anger, and despair. They won’t even protect the country from the mass invasion happening along our Southern boarder. They want those criminals here, they are the ruling class warriors.

I would much rather die in battle than to die at the hands of the criminal class, which are the warriors for the ruling class, or be put to death in one of the government’s reeducation camps. They have them all over the country, just waiting to be used. They are disguised as FEMA camps.

Our county was created for free men, by free men. Not by elitists, for their enrichment and pleasure at the expense of the rest of us.

We live in a time, in which we must make a choice. Possible death in battle or a slow undignified death at the hands of government elites or their criminal minions. It’s your choice.

If you choose poorly, you, your children and grandchildren will be living like Cubans or the folks in South American or Mexico. That’s not a pretty picture. But it is what will happen, if we fail to act. We are at a tuning point in this country, freedom or communism.

  11. RE: partitioning. Illinois has a new movement, with a reasonable plan, New Illinois, that asks counties to vote themselves into a new state. It presumes the one county which runs the rest of the state, Cook, will pass. Meetings have begun around the state.

RE: going to war. I highly recommend reading your Revolutionary War biographies, of the generals. It’s easy to talk about, but few of us have any clue what it means to do nine years of war with a superior power.

RE: going to war and partitioning. An Illinois rep has introduced a bill to make 2nd amendment “sanctuary counties” illegal. THIS will lead to war, assuming the bill passes and the state can find anyone to ENFORCE it. Americans will fight to the death on this one, and only the dumbest legislator will assume otherwise.
