The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Food takes center stage with a couple of entries including a quote from The Woodpile Report today on hunger

Antifa

Opinion Reporter Tucker Carlson had a self-described Antifa group congregated outside of what they claimed was his home chanting “We know where you sleep at night!” The group claims Carlson is a racist and that his policies are responsible for the death of thousands of people. This same group has harassed Ted Cruz and Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, forcing her to leave a restaurant in June. It’s past time that these groups are considered threats to society as this behavior goes well beyond any right to free speech. Thanks to DSV for the link.

South Africa Apartheid

Reader H.L. sent in this article showing that South Africa isn’t done with its Apartheid policies yet. The government has now barred white South Africans from registering on a government job website. In question is the Youth Employment Service (YES) website which is aimed at helping South Africans who have been jobless for longer than six months. The program is endorsed by the National Development Plan 2030 which intends to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality within the next 12 years. However, the registration criteria on the site requires the applicants to be black, in accordance with the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) definition.

The Supreme Court

The Republican Party retained control of the senate during this past election which is a good thing. Once SurvivalBlog reader sent in this article from back in September of this year reminding us that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 years old and has had a re-occurrence of malignant melanoma. She has already been treated for colon cancer in 1999 and for pancreatic cancer in 2009. The suspicion is that she will retire next year. Justice Kennedy is also 80 years old. President Trump may get to appoint at least one more and possible two more Supreme Court Justices. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell is also pledging to push through as many of Trumps originalist justices as he can. While Obama’s legacy of ruling by Executive Order was mostly wiped out by Trump within the first year, Trump’s legacy may be in place for years to come.

A Bad Sign

Reader D.S. sent in this report that the military refused an order from Trump. Trump requested that the military build migrant detention camps at the southern border crossing as the caravan continues it’s march through Mexico. While the article emphasizes the rejection of the order and the supposed “military resistance” to Trump, it does not clarify why the order was refused. I suspect that the refusal came because detention centers would be part of law enforcement which the military cannot do on U.S. soil, per the Posse Comitatus Act.

Gait Recognition

Chinese authorities are deploying a new surveillance tool: Gait Recognition. This software uses your body type and how you walk to identify you even when your face is hidden from the camera. The system is apparently able to identify people from up to 50 meters away even if your back is to the camera. Authorities also claim that it can’t be fooled by simply limping, hunching over or splaying your feet. In probably the most worrisome quote, the article states that “Using bio-metric recognition to maintain social stability and manage society is an unstoppable trend. It’s great business.”

Dehydrated Foods

Reader Paul wrote in to ask if dehydrated food options are a good idea due to their long shelf life.

SurvivalBlog has long promoted the concept of “storing what you eat and eating what you store”. The long shelf life of dehydrated (or freeze dried for that matter) is a bonus. The real benefit is the same as canned food. You don’t need electricity to store it. A power outage of just a couple of days can be enough to kill your stores of food in the refrigerator. A couple of week can finish off anything you had in the freezer. With storage options that don’t use electricity to keep them palatable, you have one less thing to worry about.

Speaking of food, Reader P. sent in this quote from November 6th on the Woodpile Report along with this commentary:

“I went through a four-month period of hunger in 1988. Minimal money, one small meal a day. I’ve never forgotten it, and to this day I still have a propensity to not leave food on the plate.”

Sometimes I despair of the nonsense otherwise sane people can believe until I remember, they’ll be my competitors when the SHTF. And no, survivalists are not a brotherly band, nor can they be. Relying on survivors I have known, of slave labor camps for one, survivalists are not selfless patrons looking to pitch in for the common good. The root word “survive” is the tip off. Preppers believe themselves to be goal oriented cooperatives, and they will be until the way ahead narrows and darkens and hard choices become no choices at all. Then they become survivalists.

Mere hard times come to an end, and survivalism begins, when the word “hungry” reclaims its original meaning. Hunger is an experience that never leaves you, and in that sense it’s a gift. It’s the survivalist’s all-purpose knife for any Gordian Knot. It’s the supreme teacher, and it appears when the student is least ready. Hunger doesn’t value your preferences, nor does it arrive dressed in gingham with recipes to make shrimp creole more tasty. But be assured, you’ll recognize it when you see it.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Anyone else notice the “coincidence” of no black clad rioters or mass shootings during the last month of the campaigning and then, after the demo-rats wins something, the fascist antifa mob are released from their restraints and mass shooting started again (CA)? The globalists ordered their useful idiots to stand down during the election, but released the hound of anarchy once the election was over. AS one of the black clad cowards stated after going after Tucker Carlson, “This is only the beginning.”

    1. Regarding “A Bad Sign”, I am not 100% in the know on this, but, they do not want to do law enforcement unless they have to. That would include running detention camps. If you remember the problems of the Haitian boat people in the 80’s, you understand why. The best use of the military is as a force multiplier with their ISR assets as well as support and logistics, which frees up others to do law enforcement. They can and will back up law officers depending what the Governors of each state affected allow, to include full detention and enforcement. But they will do so only very reluctantly.

Remember, we have enough problems with “militarized” police due to their current training. Armed Soldiers going “guns up” on someone would create first and foremost the image of the 1960’s they have worked hard to avoid since and if any bad guy launches a round, someone or some people are going to have a very bad day which again, will also create a PR nightmare.

Now the discussion about whether some of those people coming across the border are bad guys and need to have a bad day at the hands of some of our Soldiers, I’ll leave that to others who are more qualified or close to what is going on there.

  2. The comment about limping not being able to fool the gait detection software goes along with what a former CIA chief (video linked here https://youtu.be/JASUsVY5YJ8) says about not being able to consciously change how we walk. What she goes onto say is that it can be changed by putting a pebble in your shoe or by other physical means.

I wonder how that would hold up…

  3. “I suspect that the refusal came because detention centers would be part of law enforcement which the military cannot do on U.S. soil.”

They certainly can. Posse Comitatus is not an issue with troops protecting the border, and enforcing any law within the boundaries of this country they deem appropriate.
Posse Comitatus also only applies to the US Army and US Air Force. The Marines, Coast Guard, Navy, Border Patrol, National Guard, can all be deployed within the country at the direction of the CIC at any time and for any reason.
But this is a conflict on the border. The CIC can deploy any branch of the armed forces and any alphabet agency he wants to prevent an invasion.

    1. The National Guard belong to the states, not the federal govt. The CIC must ask permission of the state governor to activate his (the governor’s) troops.

However, I know of no governor that has ever refused a request from a sitting president (but California did activate far fewer troops then requested by Pres. Trump this last spring when a large group of migrants arrived near San Diego), but upon activation at the request of the CIC they (the NG soldiers) then come under title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations and thus become ‘Federal Soldiers’ and are paid by the DOD (Pentagon, not the state capital) and are under command and control of the CIC (and thus, by appointment, the military officer in charge of that theater or mission) and not the state capitol as they would be if activated by the governor for state disasters such as flood or fire.

With that being said, the state governor can take it upon him/herself and activate the NG to their own border where they would still be under state command and control.

  4. Re: hunger. How true it is, that once you’ve been hungry, you never forget. It is actually a survival skill. Hunger is quite an experience that tests your moral constitution. Few people in America have ever experienced it. Right now, our family is going through a lean time. We are having to rely on our food stores. We hadn’t been to the grocery store in 2 months. We are actually doing ok. It’s good we are going through this time while society is still ok. I actually did really good at having a wide variety of food stored and also enough nutrition in the right areas.

Re: Elections. We are in deep, deep trouble as a nation. The establishment republicans are just as evil as the democrats. There are very few freedom loving republicans. It’s really hard to even find freedom lovers to vote for. And they never win if they do get on the ballot. I am deeply troubled for our country. People don’t know how to tell the truth about who to vote for. Hint: Don’t look to endorsements, particularly from the President. I see very troubling times ahead for our republic. Our constitution is in shambles.

  5. Re: Antifa
Their tactics are right out of Saul Alinsky’s 13 Rules for Radicals. Remember Rule #8.

    8. “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.“ Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. Rule #8: Keep the pressure on. Never let up

  6. Re: US military on border

Using the US military to stop non-combatants is not what our Founders intended. And using the US military for building housing facilities for illegals is such a blatant violation of the Constitution. This old coot is horrified that any American would support that. Don’t oaths mean anything anymore?

    1. “Using the US military to stop non-combatants is not what our Founders intended.”

Just try getting onto a U.S. military base and see how quickly they will stop a non-combatant.

I cannot think of a more appropriate use of our military than to protect our borders. We aren’t talking about machine gunning non-combatants but simply apprehension and holding people who broke our laws.

I remember the oath quite well: “I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.” How does that conflict with protecting our borders?

    2. “Using the US military to stop non-combatants is not what our Founders intended.”
Really? Which one of them said that, or was it just you?

“And using the US military for building housing facilities for illegals is such a blatant violation of the Constitution.” Please point to the precise section of the Constitution to which you refer.

“This old coot is horrified that any American would support that. Don’t oaths mean anything anymore?” I took an oath to defend the Constitution, which is to say, the government and our laws, from all enemies, “foreign and domestic.” Something tells me that you certainly never did.

These people say they are coming here for a better way of life. I want them stopped in order to PRESERVE my way of life.

  7. Roger D, et al. –
I am wondering how they are able to organize, and hide in plan sight, since we seem to have no trouble targeting Islamic extremists in foreign countries? Is it government enabling them by turning a blind eye? What will be the response from government when someone eventually starts sniping these veiled and black-clad terrorists here at home during one of their riots or during one of their harassment encounters? Because we all know it’s going to happen eventually, it’s only a matter of time before someone from the right will reach the limit of their patience with this hooliganism.
I believe in Christian values, rule of law and the Constitution of these United States but this is going to keep escalating. I, for one, think that JWR’s advice to keep a passport, portable wealth and cached supplies is going to become critical in the next few years.
May God bless and watch over us because we’re going to need all the help we can find.

  8. Do not despair ! Although the dems regained the House, the President, despite propaganda to the contrary, can and will work with the other party to find common ground on SOME issues. Failing that, or in addition to that, GRIDLOCK itself can be a GREAT THING, limiting what government can do. I personally pray for the Federal government to die of atrophy and lack of feeding, with the exception of the military, of course. And the Parks service.
Do not worry- God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit are firmly in charge !

  9. I don’t know where Tucker Carlson lives, but if some masked, black-clad person harassed me or my family and tried to kick in my door, in my state I would be allowed to shoot him/her/it to protect myself.

  10. Re Roger D’s comment “Using the US military to stop non-combatants is not what our Founders intended”

    1) ha ha ha Tell that to the Comanches, the Apaches, the Sioux, etc. “Reservation” has always been Washington’s word for “concentration camp”.

    2) A government which takes $1 Trillion a year of our taxes for “defense” and yet doesn’t defend our borders from invaders is a government which deserves to be thrown out of office by the voters. Why should my son register for the draft –to possibly die on the battlefield — to defend you when you are willing to stab him in the back and hand the country and its jobs over to foreigners?

Or is the military supposed to fight only to defend some Democrat billionaires’ investments overseas?

And why should traitors in our midst –including part of the Democrat leadership –be allowed to keep US citizenship and to promote a racist agenda that puts loyalty to a foreign ethnic group above the loyalty they owe to their fellow Americans?

    1. I was SHOCKED this week when I found out that several members of congress HAVE DUAL CITIZENSHIP WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. Why is this allowed ? Here they are- (Senators)
Michael Bennet D-CO, Richard Blumenthal D-CT, Benjamin Cardin D-MD, Dianne Feinstein D-CA,
Brian Schatz D-HI, Bernie Sanders I-VT, Chucky Schumer, D-NY, Ron Wyden D-WA

(Reps) David Cicilline D-RI, Stephen Cohen D-TN, Susan Davis D-CA, Ted Deutch D-FL,
Eliot Engel D-NY, Lois Frankel D-FL, Josh Gottheimer D-NJ, Steve Israel D-NY, David Kutsoff R-TN
Sander Levin D-MI, Alan Lowenthal D-CA, Nita Lowey D-NY, Jerrold Nadler D-NY, Jared Polis D-CO,
Jamie Raskin D-MD, Jacky Rosen D-NV, Jan Shakowsky D-IL, Adam Schiff D-CA,
      Brad Sherman D-CA, Brad Schneider D-IL, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz D-FL, John Yamuth D-KY,
      and Lee Zeldin R-NY.

We need an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to outlaw the elegibility of foreign citizens to serve as lawmakers. When someone comes into our country and becomes a CITIZEN, they must renounce any and all loyalty to foreign rulers and governments. Why should we not require the same from those who WRITE OUR LAWS ? Our laws- many of which they EXEMPT THEMSELVES FROM. One more thing- some of these suspects are on very sensitive comittees such as Armed Forces, Appropriations, Intelligence, and others where U.S. secrets are disclosed to them. It is only “common sense” (LOL) that these lawmakers of questionable motives be forced to 1) renounce their foreign citizenship, or 2) resign from congress.

      1. 1) Jewish Americans are our fellow Americans and should not be accused of something without proof. While Jewish Americans may be eligible for Israeli citizenship, my understanding is that they must take affirmative action to become Israeli citizens. How many of the above politicans have done that –e.g, have acquired Israeli passports?

        2) When questioned on this subject , Bernie Sanders angrily asserted that he is American and NOT a citizen of any other country.
        https://www.politifact.com/punditfact/article/2015/jun/11/backstory-behind-diane-rehms-question-bernie-sande/

        3) An article in the leftish Counterpunch argues against Dual Citizenship by lawmakers. I also am opposed to it but US law currently allows it.

The Counterpunch author made repeated formal requests to Congress (to his members of Congress, FOIA requests, etc) to find out if any Members of Congress are actually dual citizens but was unable to get an answer:

        https://www.counterpunch.org/2015/01/23/dual-citizens-in-congress-2/

        https://www.counterpunch.org/2014/11/12/dual-citizens-in-congress/

One staffer told him it was none of his business.

        4) It should also be noted that many Americans are eligible for foreign citizenship in EU countries due to parents or grandparents. But , again, the question should be what they have DONE to actually acquire that citizenship?

        5) There have also been reports of rich Americans buying foreign citizenships to acquire second passports so that they can open up offshore banking accounts immune to IRS scrutiny. Such citizenships are relatively cheap if sold by small , poor countries like St Kitts, Vanatu, etc but even the USA engages in the practice if enough money is at hand. Malta’s is reputedly valued because it is EU and so allows the holder to travel anywhere in the EU.

        1. It does not matter if the lawmakers in question are citizens of Israel, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or any other foreign country, even the most friendly to us. Anyone with allegiance or loyalty to any foreign government or power has no business handling our classified material or making laws for the American people. This must change. We must have undivided loyalty from all lawmakers. Anything else is insanity. The opportunity and temptation for treason is too great. Especially from the questionable people on this list.

  11. IT is amazing how the same people who bleat about “climate change” fail to realize what happens when harvests fail. Who don’t know the word “Volkerwanderung”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migration_Period

Those migrations took down the Roman Empire. Of course, the Roman Empire didn’t have AC-130 gunships:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_AC-130#/media/File:AC-130_gunship_firing_broadside_at_dusk.jpg

The USA and Canada are among the few countries which are self-sufficient in food.
But combined we are only roughly 360 million people on a planet with 7.5 BILLION people and climbing.

    1. No, they didn´t.

They ´d a well organised, professional Military of About 500.000 troops lavishly equipped, well supplied,

The Germanic tribes had their very less well equipped, supplied Warriors, they ended with federations of tribes with armies who changed and outfought the legions and their successors.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Adrianople

And some time later a frank was crowned empereor of the west.

A house divided can not stand.

  12. I hope you don’t mind if I share this with others.

May the Lord watch over us and protect us from the things that maybe to come.

    Love you brother.

  13. Mr. Williams asks,
Why should my son register for the draft –to possibly die on the battlefield — to defend you when you are willing to stab him in the back and hand the country and its jobs over to foreigners?”
This triggered my imagination… I HAVE TO ASK, (and it is a real question)
Do gender dysphoric ‘women with male plumbing’ have to register for the draft?
    How about ‘men with none?’

  14. I think it was old time humorist Will Rogers who read the headlines “Congress is Deadlocked and Can Not Act”, he then commented “thank God for small favors”! It has often been said that our life, liberty, and property are in peril whenever congress is in session. So with Dems controlling the house Gridlock is a good thing! Fortunately, now the Senate should not have ANY difficulty confirming Constitutionalist justices.

  15. Good justices are a great thing, but let us not forget that we lost a good justice, perhaps the best one on the court, under suspicious circumstances near the end of the last administration. Do we think for a minute the left will not use violence if blackmail or other forms of coercion prove ineffective? We need to stop attributing our own morals to the traitors in our midst, and while we may draw some comfort from the appointing of a good man to the SCOTUS, we should not view it as a failsafe against tyranny. We are that failsafe, and ahould be careful about delegating that responsibility to anyone else.

  16. I liked the comments on hunger. When I was very young I remember always being hungry. I remember little else from that time and later learned just how poor we were. Today I fast for two weeks four times a year and every Sunday.

I am never hungry when I fast as I know I can eat whenever I choose. Yet I still remember being hungry as a small child. It is more than just putting food in your mouth.

When overfed America hits hard times for the fist time, all hell will break loose. People will go completely nuts over their perceived hunger long before it is any physical threat to their health. So Yes – your going to see a lot of fat people rioting for food!

  17. It seems to me that when the Antifa bunch or others like them harass and threaten conservatives it is sort of like a person going in to the woods and switching a bear. A bear that chooses not to eat said offender. So far the bear has been patient.

  18. Nathan H., if what you report about dual-citizenship can be verified, I think it should be the lead story on every news outlet! I’m astounded! I was taught in high school that America does not allow dual-citizenship (nor should it!). Now I see reference to it all the time – what changed? (or perhaps I was taught wrong – it was a public school, after all).

The trend in party affiliation is predictable.

  19. Dear RebIanos, If you have male plumbing you must register for the draft (selective service), if you are a woman (biologically) you do not, (although I believe if you think you are a ‘male’ you should volunteer to register. Fortunately these freaks (for the most part) are not serving, as my son, who is currently serving overseas in Afghanistan says ‘we don’t need them, they are a drag (no pun intended) on the unit”.

    1. Deuteronomy 20:5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man [is there] that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
20:6 And what man [is he] that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not [yet] eaten of it? let him [also] go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
20:7 And what man [is there] that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
20:8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man [is there that is] fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

A few good men are worth a lot more than a lot of useless targets.

  20. The biggest story here is the gait-tracking. Biometrics are not simply a “worrisome trend.” it is legalized identify theft, all under the guise of “safety” and “fraud prevention, and already proven to be hackable. Once you are in a government biometric database, you are fully assimilated into the technology totalitarian surveillance grid. So don’t do it. Move to a opt-out state (Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, New Hampshire), and plan to decrease your dependence on anything outside of local, small businesses, barter, and self-sufficiency. The anschluss has begun.
