SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt

Here is SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt. This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. We also mention companies of interest to preppers that are located in the region. Today, we are making special mention of a 7,000-pound “drug bust” that turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. (See the Idaho section.)

Idaho

The test results are in. Here’s what was in that semi-truck full of a green, leafy substance. Here is how the news story begins:

“A federal judge on Friday approved the release of test results on 7,000 pounds of a green, leafy substance seized by Idaho State Police in January.

At the time, ISP called the seizure a marijuana bust — perhaps the largest in agency history. The company that owned the crop claimed it was hemp. Test results found that it is indeed industrial hemp.

Big Sky Scientific, the company that owns the hemp, sued Idaho State Police asking for the release of its industrial hemp and its truck. On Feb. 19, U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Ronald Bush denied the release of the hemp, but on Friday determined that the testing results would be made public record.

The 2018 Farm Bill made the growth and sale of industrial hemp legal across the country, as long as it has a THC concentration of less than .3 percent. THC is the psychoactive component in some forms of cannabis that creates a high for the user.”

Montana

Montana threatens to pull exclusive club’s liquor licenses. The news piece begins:

“Members like Bill Gates and Justin Timberlake might find it difficult to get a drink the next time they go skiing at the exclusive Yellowstone Club if state regulators follow through on their threat to pull several liquor licenses from the Montana resort.

State Department of Revenue officials have sent notice that they plan to revoke four licenses issued for facilities on the Yellowstone Club’s sprawling mountainside property for allegedly serving drinks in an unlicensed location and hiding the evidence from inspectors.”

Wyoming

Reader T.Z. mentioned this news headline, from Park County Wyoming: Preparing for the worst, county builds EMP-proof room. The article begins:

“As his time as Park County’s Homeland Security Coordinator neared its end last week, Mart Knapp was busy putting up strips of foil in a subterranean room. The roughly $12,000 project — intended to shield the room from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or solar flare — was one of Knapp’s final efforts to help the county prepare for the worst.

As homeland security coordinator, Knapp has assisted in drawing up plans for responding to crises ranging from floods to earthquakes to extreme winter storms.

Weaponized EMPs and solar flares are a different kind of potential threat. They’re bursts of electromagnetic energy from a weapon or the sun — and they carry the potential to destroy large swaths of the country’s electric grid, communications systems and all the other things that rely on electronics.

Two big music festivals are scheduled for the summer of 2019 in Alta, Wyoming: The 15th Annual Targhee Fest (July 12th to14th) and the Grand Targhee Resort Bluegrass Festival (August 9th to 11th.)  You probably don’t worry about the local weather being too hot, since the resort is at 7,800 foot elevation!

  1. I don’t use drugs and never have…..but it is useless for the government to attempt to ban anything that the people think they want. Prohibition simply raises the price and makes criminals. People should be judged by their actions, not by what they possess or use. The “War on Drugs” has generated a huge militarized domestic police force which has become dangerous in itself.

    1. Ken, you are singing my song. The War on Drugs has taken many casualties among the innocent.

And, industrial hemp…that is a crop for preppers. Now that it is legal, I plan to seek seeds. The many uses of the plant are legion.

      Carry on

    1. That’s a great idea, s.lynn! The usual objection is that “2 new senators (etc)” would be created for the ‘other’ side. Your solution obviates that objection.

      1. While we’re at it, Idaho could take in eastern Oregon, too. OR…divide oregon/washington inhalf via a north/south border line since it seems the coast is liberal and the east is conservative.
