Preparedness Notes for Thursday — April 30, 2020

Today is the 82nd birthday of sci-fi novelist Larry Niven (Laurence van Cott Niven, born April 30, 1938). Along with Jerry Pournelle, he co-authored the survivalist classic Lucifer’s Hammer. April 30th is also the birthday of Ed Yourdon, who was born in 1944.

I just heard that EMP Shield (one of our affiliate advertisers) has started a 15% off sale, that will last just 36 hours. If you’ve been considering placing an order, then this is your chance. Get your order in soon!

  1. Jim/Hugh,

You mentioned the sale at EMP shield. Does the vehicle protection module really work? Wasn’t aware that a product existed that would protect a vehicle. Their website is vague about the details of how it protects.

    Thanks,

    Russ

  2. If you haven’t read Lucifer’s Hammer it’s a good read, multiple story lines that eventually converge.

It was written in 1977 so, like Alas Babylon, has some fun dated material.

    1. The fun, dated material. Yes. Every little bit, a morsel followed by my internal chuckle.

This reminds me of another conversation on SB. I’m curious how you, compatriots, became involved in this way of living that some call prepping.

Was it a book like Lucifer’s Hammer? A book about surviving in the woods? A friend or family member?

Then, what about that introduction to this life led you to next steps? Warnings about societal breakdown? How-to manuals?

Superheroes have origin stories…so do you.

      Carry on in grace

      1. Hey Marine, I agree, it would be pretty fascinating to hear everyone’s story on how they got into prepping. It finally sunk in this week when I read all the comments to Ani’s article that there are a lot of different definitions for the term “prepping.” So it would be equally interesting to hear what people’s personal definition of prepping is.

For me, “prepping” is only about getting ready for TEOTWAWKI, Patriots, Alas Babylon sort of stuff. Everything else is just me living my normal self-reliant lifestyle. Having a year’s supply of beans and rice, wheat, sugar, coffee, heirloom seeds, all my home-canned goods, and home-grown herbs and teas, etc., and buying my non-perishables once a year is just practicing good economics and self-reliance, not prepping.

  3. I ordered an EMP Shield for my home today. Had a great chat with Andrew.

I wanted to pass on for those who aren’t ready to purchase yet. They have a veteran discount of 15% if you call them.
