Preparedness Notes for Saturday — March 23, 2019

This is the birthday of acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa [1]. He directed 30 films. His samurai films (many starring Toshiro Mifune) such as Yojimbo [2], Sanjuro [2], The Hidden Fortress [3], Rashomon [4], The Seven Samurai [1], Kagemusha [5], and Ran [6] are considered legendary in the cinema world.

It’s funny that this came up today, because I was just reading about this guy last night. I also watched a clip from Yojimbo, since I liked Sergio Leone’s Western remake (For a Fistful of Dollars,) so much. It’s interesting how similar European knights, Japanese samurai, and Western gunslinger are from a cultural standpoint, to the point that one’s story may be easily adapted to the other.
