Three Letters Re: Hurricane Sandy After Action Reports

…of this saying. I was very happy to help other people. Because as soon as I got out of feeling sorry for myself I was able to feel great in helping others. This by the way has saved my life in another aspect. I’m an alcoholic and if I had not learned the lessons I had over half a decade ago things would have only gotten worse in this tragedy and I would not have my wits about me nor my family as they would have left many years ago.   I hope this has helped you. Best, – One Lucky Guy (and family).   Dear Rawles Family, I have been an avid reader of your blog for about seven years. You actually recently featured a link on your blog to my radio show on blog talk radio called The Homeschool Homemaker where I discussed what Homeschoolers and Homemakers can learn…

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Homeschooling is under attack in Kalifornia as authorities ignore clear signs of mental sickness and blame the excuse. Grenade Launcher Goodwill is apparently the place to obtain your hardware. Reader T.J. sent in this article showing that someone donated a grenade launcher to Goodwill along with several other items. The only problem is that it was loaded – with a live grenade. The launcher was received from another store. Employees said they forwarded it because they didn’t know what it was. Kalifornia Homeschool Kalifornia is seeking to treat homeschool families as presumptive child abusers. Despite the clear unconstitutionality of the proposed measure, lawmakers have plans to require invasive procedures. These include home visits, interviews and other government oversight, to force parents to…

Letter Re: Advice on Classic Books for Homeschooling

Mr. Rawles, This is in response to Paula S.’s recent letter requesting information on classic books for homeschooling. I just returned from a homeschool convention in Memphis where I was introduced to Memoria Press. They have curricula for parents interesting in providing their children with a classical education. I have looked at the early elementary sets–they include books for the kids to read aloud and other books to be read aloud to the children. You do not have to buy their material to see the list of books that they use–the lists are posted on their web site under each curriculum description. Sonlight is another homeschool curriculum that relies heavily on “living books” for the student’s education. You can find all of the books that they use listed on their web site. They offer a free catalog which is filled with useful information. For history, there is a series called…

Parents have banded together and demanded that the teacher be fired and at least one parent has removed their child from the classroom. The school district has a policy that is supposed to keep teachers from using their political views in their teaching curriculum, but it obviously isn’t working. Time to get out! o o o If you are pulling your child from public school and private school is not an option, what do you do? You do what people have done for thousands of years. You homeschool! If you think that is an overwhelming option, this article can get you started: What If You’re Forced To Homeschool? Thanks to H.L for the link. Prepping for Children, and Teaching Them Preparedness, by RSC

…like. Last year we felt our other preps were sufficiently in place and it was time to look towards schooling. We sold an asset and used the money (just under $3000) to purchase the school books for every child from now until 12th grade. It seems silly to have the high school books for our 8 month old, but we do! Our chosen curriculum is mostly non-consumable and is one of the more affordable ones available. You might need to spend much more than that if you use a consumable curriculum. One good thing is that it will not go to waste – we would be buying it anyway, just not all at once. If you do not already homeschool, or can not manage to spend that chunk of money, you can still provide for their educational needs. Our local school district has one weekend a year where they give…

Avalanche Lily’s Bedside Book Pile

…book. It is an excellent catalog for acquiring anything and everything on nearly any homeschool subject. For folks new to homeschooling or contemplating it, the catalog is also is a great book that gives an overview of the many types of homeschool philosophies and programs and curriculums available. In a sense, it could be considered a modern Codex Calixtinus for homeschoolers. I’m right in the middle of reading the new book Crashing the Dollar: How to Survive a Global Currency Crisis by Craig Smith. It is a well-researched book that spells out the current monetary and credit market policies, and their inevitable conclusion. It is a very, very scary scenario that is being continued at an accelerated pace by BHO and his buddies in D.C. I’d say that this is a good book to give to your relatives that don’t understand the need to hedge their investments with precious metals….

Letter Re: Preparedness-Oriented Homeschooling Curriculum

Hello Rawles Family, We have been viewing your site for a few months after reading “Patriots” (loved it!) and have a suggested resource for other families. We are long term veteran homeschooling family, self sufficiency oriented, husband former military (Viet Nam), ordained ministers who choose to develop house church networks in view of the likely future. We currently reside in upper northwest Montana after being in other regions gaining broad experience. A Conversation with a TEOTWAWKI Survivor, by Rachel M.

…will come, free of charge, to your location and present the events of April 19, 1775 in a manner suitable for your group. You can request a presentation at a church retreat, a Boy Scout troop meeting, a gun club luncheon, a grassroots political meeting, a homeschool book fair or conference, or even a group of your family and friends gathered in your home. Think of a LibertySeed presentation as a conversation with a TEOTWAWKI survivor: you get to hear vivid accounts of the preparations made, the networking put into place, the brilliant minds who sparked fires of liberty, and the faithful men who carried on and endured more pain than we can imagine. As you hear this fascinating history – your story – you will begin to understand why our nation’s government was set up the way it is. You will regain motivation to make the best possible use…

…recent newsletter: “Something doesn’t add up. According to the U.S. government’s National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2012, there were 1.77 million homeschooled students in 2012. This is reported in Figure 1 (p. 7). This was 3.4% of all students (Table 1, p. 6). This report was published in 2017. In that same year, the NCES published another report. In it, we are told that the number of homeschooled students in 2016 was 1.69 million. This was 3.3% of all students. This is reported in Table 7 (p. 18). So, we are asked to believe, between 2012 and 2016, the number of homeschooled students fell by 81,000 students. Does this reflect your experience? Maybe more homeschool parents are refusing to answer government surveys, or maybe it’s normal sampling error. But I don’t believe that homeschooling became less popular between 2012 and 2016. I wonder what the next survey will report…

…Converts: Poll Shows Vast Number of US Families Might Keep Kids at Home Now. A quote: “The nationwide lockdowns may lead to a bigger shift in the way American families do school. A new RealClear Opinion Research poll of 2,122 registered voters reveals a big increase in parents who might keep homeschooling their children after the pandemic ends, and many more support having educational choices. The poll shows that 40 percent of families are more likely to use homeschooling or virtual school education after lockdown restrictions are lifted. And 64 percent support having the choice of a public or private school, according to The American Federation for Children.” And here is an article on the same theme, at Reason, by John Stossel: Homeschooling Thrives in the Face of Coronavirus. …dogs. Or they could sense that they weren’t in hunting mode. I’ve definitely seen more alertness out of our large livestock when a bear or big cat or even a deer seems to be nearby. I was thinking, “Well, great help you’ll be to me if a pack of wolves comes around.” I have to say that this is only the second time that I have really laid eyes on actual wolves here in the area. One early morning, while driving to our homeschool group meeting, I saw what I thought was probably a wolf slinking very low to the ground crossing the road about a half-mile ahead of my vehicle. That animal looked very sinister. This was about three miles down the road from our ranch. Before that sighting, looking out the window, I did see one wolf walk along the river once–on the far side. That side of…
