On Respirators and Viruses, by Marius

Tunnel Rabbit Gas Masks I’ve suggested the Czech M10 gas mask the other day in the comments section. If you choose this gas mask, check the filter color. White colored filters are good for smoke, pepper spray and other chemicals. If the filters are not in a separate, and unopened aluminum packaging, and gray in color that are charcoal filters, you’ll need to order these replacements that are rated for biological hazards. If the package is compromised, the activated charcoal filter may not be any good. These are only 2 dollars a pair, get many pairs of replacements. Use fresh filters: https://www.militaryclothing.com/czech-gas-mask-filter-m10-2pack.aspx Inforwars is doing a great job of investigating developments. Letter Re: Questions on British Berkefeld Water Filters and Eastern U.S. Retreat Locales

Jim, My wife and I are ready to make a purchase of a water purifier. I have taken your advise as a reader of SurvivalBlog and researched the Berkey products and I also looked at Aquarian. I have decided on the Berkey and am leaning toward the Travel Berkey Water Purifier that is listed on Get Ready Industries web site at $199. This unit appears to be usable on the go and as a purification unit in a retreat situation. I would like you thoughts on this unit when you have time. For your information we live in eastern Kansas about 50 mile south of the Kansas City area. In the event of an emergency situation we intend to head to southwest Missouri to join with family in a rural area where we all grew up and farmed. My wife and I want to distance ourselves from the general population…

Letter Re: Some Defective Lots of Black Berkey Water Filters

Sir: I have purchased a Big Berkey recently and ended up with several defective filters, just as was recently mentioned in SurvivalBlog. I discovered this when the unfiltered chlorinated water destroyed a gallon of my sweet tea. The glue that was on it looked a lot like a kind of hot glue! I didn’t want to hassle with the long waiting list, so I removed the excess glue and “re-glued” it with a tube of clear silicone [RTV] caulk that I bought at Home Depot for $4. It is a simple fix and it lasts. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the tube and don’t let the silicon run into the little plastic nozzle. The original glue lasted a week, and the caulk has thusfar lasted 5 months. Good luck! Enjoy you clean water!! – Thomas D….

Letter Re: Some Defective Lots of Black Berkey Water Filters

Dear JWR: I just cleaned my Royal Berkey and noticed that 3 of the 4 filter elements (the Black version) were loose. The adhesive that attaches the end-cap to the carbon filter came loose. So I called the vendor and they said Berkey will send free replacement filters for all of the filter systems I purchased. A remediation is in effect with manufacturer lots beginning with June. So if you have a black Berkey filter that was made before June of 2011, then check to see if the cap is loose. You may be drinking unfiltered water! – Ken C. in South Carolina…

When Do We Change Masks? – Part 2, by ShepherdFarmerGeek

…(without treatment) and dipped in the iso-propanol (IPA) (for charge removal purposes). The maximum penetrations at MPPS were less than 5% for N99 and N95, 0.03 % for R99 and 0.001 for P100 filters when the filters were not treated. However, for the case when the filters were dipped into the IPA, the maximum penetration changed to 33-55, 50 and 4%, respectively (Martin and Moyer, 2000).” The same effect where alcohol removes the electrostatic charge significantly reducing filter efficiency is mentioned in these papers/studies as well: http://aaqr.org/files/article/358/19_AAQR-15-06-OA-0399_212-220.pdf https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/irv.12095 https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/bee-facpres/8/ Stay safe everyone. greg I read about a doctor group, I think from WHO, who was allowed access to China. They confirmed that China was making progress. You can also look at Korea and Taiwan, maybe Hong Kong too. They are slowing down, sometimes significantly, spread of the virus. I think the virus can be clamped down, the question is for…

Two Letters Re: Prioritized Prepping

…of research on gas mask filters a few months back after realizing the filters that came with my ‘brand new in box’ Israeli masks found at a thrift store were woefully expired. Masks in perfect shape, probably sat boxed in someone’s attic for 25 years. Filters generally have a shelf life of 10-15 years provided they are sealed and kept free from moisture. A good quality filter is something worth investing in, not saving a few bucks because it “might” work. An expired filter might help, it might not. Make sure your filter is rated for NBC protection, this covers the whole gamut of potential toxins. These filters protect you from all known biological agents in addition to chemicals like sarin and other nerve gases, mustard gas, cyanogen, arsine, phosgene plus many organic and inorganic gases/vapors and inorganic acids. I spent hours researching the purchase of filters online and let…

Improvising PPE by Louie in Ohio

…they would be effective against most gases. The HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are used for solid particles in the air, including dust. This would be effective in the case of nuclear dust fallout. Filter cartridges are available with either of these media. However, whenever I have a choice I will use both together. Some filter cartridges are made with both carbon and HEPA. There are also “add on” HEPA filters that attach over the intake on carbon filters. Please be aware when buying mil-surp masks that correct cartridges may not be available. One other point before we proceed; gas mask type filters do NOT supply oxygen. In a low-oxygen environment you will need to supplement with oxygen and/or breathing air via a device such as SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) or SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus). Without supplied air you must leave the area immediately if you find yourself…

…is bad. The mixture will turn to sludge and sludge doesn’t cool well. If you need to top-off, use water. If you switch coolants, be sure to completely flush the system (two times at least) using water, then refill with the old-style green coolant. Don’t wait until belts and hoses fail before replacing them. If your vehicle is over five years old and/or has over 100,000 miles on it, replace all your belts and hoses. Consider it cheap insurance and prevent the first link of a catastrophic error chain. Check your cooling system regularly and if you have coolant leaks, get them fixed! Letter Re: Diatomaceous Earth and “Nano Masks”

…I go out where public contact may or will be expected, so why, again, would I want to filter my exhalations? This makes no sense for “survivalist-type” scenarios… Nano-Mask concern #2: MOISTURE!!! Since the nano mask has no exhalation valve and filters both inhalations and exhalations, all that hot, moist air I am exhaling is now DIRECTLY IMPACTING the nano filter media. Add in heavy breathing from physical exertion or stress and you are talking about a huge moisture problem! Unless specifically designed to do so, such as a water filter, moisture DESTROYS a filters ability to operate properly by CLOGGING the filter media with water. Gas mask filters are a great example! There is not a gas mask filter anywhere that I know of that works properly when WET, which is why ALL quality gas masks have EXHALATION VALVES. Think about that! Nano-Mask concern #3: SMALL FILTER MEDIA! Take…

Orange Coffee Nut Firestarters, by Missouri Maven

…I have. Some of the items used include: Paper grocery bags, cut in six- to eight-inch wide shapes. Squares, circles, and polygons work great. If I let my grandkids color on the bags first, they burn even better and look great in their bucket. My grandkids love to help draw the shapes and cut them out, too. My favorite bags are the grocery store ones with handles on them. I carefully tear off the handles; they make great wicks or can be used for other things. Used coffee grounds and filters. I use a small 4-cup coffee maker to satisfy my daily need for a caffein fix. I save both the grounds and the filters. Each morning the coffee filters make a great transportation device to move the four tablespoons of the prior morning’s coffee grounds to my dehydrator. Once I get it over to the tray, I flatten it…

Nuclear War Won’t Be Like Hollywood Portrays It- Part 1, by 3ADscout

The first strike wins…Russia is fully prepared, and our “leaders” are totally bought and paid for, leaving our nation without borders, let alone defenses or fall out shelters. What about our wheat and corn reserves, fuels good for a change but our refinery’s have taken some hits in recent years. As to filters, think hepa, they do the best job and final job. perhaps some regular filters first to contain the larger particles would be wise as well. Filters will be valuable, if you have a plan to use them wisely, efficiently. I think water filters and air filters are crucial, not either or. Kinda like gas masks…….

…much more resistant to impact. When used LEDs, batteries last much longer. LED headlights are close to ideal for doing chores, since they keep your hands free. Tactical use requires a hand-held or weapon-mounted light [with an intermittent switch.] Krazy Glue [cyanoacrylate adhesive] is great for closing small cuts [after they have been properly cleaned.] Steri-strips are the next step up in holding ability. Water Filters – Culligan’s new EZ-change Level 4 [under-sink] filter [cartridge] is rated to treat 500 gallons. That is five time the volume of most compact backpacking filters. With a self-contained design, it would be easy to attach a pump. The are available for $38 through Amazon.com. Most [other] under-sink filters could be used the same way, but the Culligan design is preferable because it is fairly compact. For “ready made” backpacking filters, I prefer the First Need brand filters. These are rated to remove viruses…

Letter: Clarifications on N95 Masks

…first part of the filter’s classification uses the letters N, R, or P to indicate the filter’s ability to function when exposed to oils. “N” means Not resistant to oil; “R” means somewhat Resistant to oil; and “P” means strongly resistant to oil, or oil-Proof. This rating is only important in work settings where oils may be present, because some oils can reduce the effectiveness of the filter. The second part of the classification — the number– refers to the filter’s ability to remove the most-penetrating particle size during “worst case” testing. Filters that remove at least 95 percent of these particles are given a 95 rating. Those that filter out at least 99 percent receive a 99 rating, and those that filter out at least 99.97 percent – essentially 100 percent – receive a 100 rating. Using this classification method, an N95 filter is not resistant to oil and…

Letter on the Wuhan Virus, by ShepherdFarmerGeek

…has, yet it will become quickly meaningless, and banks will at a point, refuse to do business. This pandemic is about more than just a nasty bug. Tunnel Rabbit Hi Wheatley Fisher, Thanks for letting me know Glad to have helped some one. It makes sense that these are a much more effective option than the N95 masks that now probably cost more than the replacement NBC filters for the M10 Czech mask, that I picked up for only $2.00 per pair, plus shipping. These are new masks. The NBC filters should be in a sealed mylar packaging, and be gray in color. These should look like this: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/gasmaskandrespirator/images/f/f6/20170502_144243.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/185?cb=20170507133755 The white filter that comes in a standard bag is good for only tear gas, pepper spray, and other chemicals, and other smelly things. Good for skunk hunting too. Believe me, you’ll want a mask for rotting things. I would practice…

Letter Re: Diverters and Pre-Filters for Roof Rainwater Catchment

Mr. Rawles, Regarding the filter design suggested by “Dim Tim”: Consider replacing the modified stockpot with a sink. A deep stainless utility sink would be ideal, would require little alteration, and could be set up outdoors at the downspout to drain directly to a retention barrel or bladder. In a SHTF scenario, an existing indoor sink could be modified by removing the trap underneath the sink. Collected water can then be poured into the sink, filter through, and drain underneath (a food grade plastic five gallon bucket fits quite nicely.) Regards, – Tamara S….
