Getting Others On Board (A Prayer Answered), by Michael T.

The most amazing thing happened to my wife and I. First, some background about us.  I am a retired Master Sergeant from the Army.  I currently work for them in a civilian role in California.  My wife and I decided after my retirement in 2005 that being tied to a home and living in New York City was not in our best interest.  So, we sold everything, bought a heavy duty truck and RV and we left. Well, since moving to California, I found myself having more time to get into some things that I always wanted to.  I wanted things such as owning and carrying firearms, hiking and camping and Survival Prep and learning how to hunt and garden.  Lucky for me my wife shared the same goals as I.  Well, one day while on one of the gun web sites that I frequent, someone recommended the novel “Patriots”. …

Escaping the HOA Hole

…for pointing out this difference. SH in TX Sometimes the compromises that are often the cornerstone of a marriage lead to buying a house in an HOA neighborhood – don’t ask me how I know. Before we signed the contract on a lovely home on 2 acres in an “acreage community” I pointed out to my dear wife the section of the covenants dealing with annual fees (and the board‘s ability to “adjust” them) and the power of the board to “impose” assessments “as needed”. I stated that we were, in effect, signing a blank check. My dear wife reminded me of how paranoid I am, and how I don’t trust anyone. Furthermore, “they CAN’T just MAKE us pay extra money” became the battle cry. It was a nice neighborhood, had room for a workshop – my wife was a suburban gal…I folded like a portable solar panel. Well…after six…

Survival Partnership: Getting Your Wife On Board for Prepping, by Tracey K.

I wanted to write about how to possibly get your wife on board for when SHTF from my own experience.  I think I should start out with first giving all the credit to my husband.  In vain he had tried for many years to get me on board.  He would request that we purchase guns, have supplies, buy gold/silver etc.  All that talk and the only word I ever heard was gun.  Are you kidding me?  Guns had always represented a negative feeling inside me.  Now I don’t want to go into the discussion of whether they are right or wrong because that’s not what this article is about. My husband tried many approaches.  I used to think; here he goes again wanting to play Army Man.   Nope, not going to happen.  It was as if I had blinders on, walking through life.  Yeah, yeah, yeah I heard the news…

How to Survive Your Survivor Obsessed Husband, by Abigail A.

…husband’s passion for prepping unnerved her. In addition to the physical and emotional toll of child rearing and pregnancy, she was equal parts annoyed and afraid. In that moment, I saw my former self– the fatigued mom at the beginning of a survival prepping journey. As I recalled what encouraged my heart, what fed my soul, and made me braver, I spoke in hopes of the same for her. Dear Husbands Dear husbands reading this, please take heart of my story. Be tender and patient with your wife. Your shoulders must be broad as she grows strong. Dear Wife Friend For you, dear wife friend, I hope your husband shares this article and that you don’t wave it away (as I often did). The sky will fall, but you will not, and you do not need to live wrapped in anxiety as I once did. 1. Give a Long Leash…

…if that makes any sense! So I rooting through multiple “organizers” to find what I need. No more. Maybe this winter I’ll find a pan and get to work. I’ll Make some labels for those organizers that are better than “washers” – a little more description will be helpful. As for your drill bit project I feel your pain there too. One of the things I started to do while building the two 8×7 sheds was to put the bits and drivers right in the box with the screws. I love Peg board!! My buddy that helped me with the rain catchment project is in awe at how I set up my workshop with peg board, dry erase board and little parts cabinets. This fall I am heading over to help him put up and organize peg board. 3AD Scout Josiah – I agree with St. Funogas- an article would…

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

board were several photo’s of different animals and insects. Something about that brief footage troubled me. The pictures included a bat, a sea star, and two hand drawings of ticks. It was clear the individual was making notes regarding gene sequencing and there was a partial hand drawn gene sequence on the board. I spent much of that day trying to figure out why, a sea star and ticks would be on that same board with a bat. It almost seemed like they were trying to incorporate different animal traits into a strain. Then I remembered hearing a week or two ago that one of the early indications of nCoV was loss of smell and taste. Wasn’t there a tick born illness that included loss of taste/smell? I know Lyme disease affects taste. Wasn’t there another tick that was associated with that like the Asia Longhorned or Lone Star ticks?…

Travel Security, by CapnRick in Argentina (Part 1 of 2)

…and front of each cabin is where the bad guys congregate to watch over the victims. Consider what you can do to avoid being obvious about your business/military/nationality/religious affiliations. Cruise Ship Security Cruise ships are like a small city where passengers are encouraged to forget their troubles and relax once onboard ship. It is natural for passengers on vacation to let their guard down, especially when out to sea in a resort-like setting. Try to not let a false sense of security aboard a cruise ruin your vacation by becoming a crime victim. Before you ship out, consider taking some of these preventative steps: After you enter your cabin, and while the door is still open, always check inside the bathroom or closest before sitting down inside. Don’t assume that your cabin is as secure as a hotel. Many people have keys to your cabin and your cabin door may…

Advantages of Owning a Small Sawmill for Homestead and Retreat Building, by Tennessee Hillbilly

…amount of fuel. Certainly a horse or other draft animal would be a worthwhile addition in a fuel shortage. Another advantage now, but especially during a fuel shortage, is the ever abundant supply of slabs that make excellent firewood. The set up I have has the ability to saw logs up to 24 feet in length and a diameter larger than I care to handle. There are considerably more board feet of lumber in a large diameter log, but small logs are much easier and safer to handle. Many types of log scales are available to measure to small end of a log and provide some prediction of the number of board feet of lumber in the log. They typically look like a complicated yard stick, but anyone can learn to use one in a matter of minutes. A board foot is a measure of lumber that contains 144 cubic…

Two Letters Re: Getting a Spouse “On Board” with Preparedness

Jim – Your post for today brings up the topic of the spouse that goes fetal versus choosing to cope with the world’s ugliness. Please open up the forum to hear how other people go their wife to the game! Maybe someone has a great technique that I haven’t thought of! – D.A.B. Mr. Rawles: I can certainly relate. My spouse doesn’t show much interest in preparedness either-but in our case-my spouse is my husband. He acts like my preparedness ideas and actions are just a goofy hobby. Any ideas on why a man would be in “denial”? -L.B….

A Memoir On One Family’s Move To The American Redoubt- Part 6, by X. Liberal & China Doll

…backing boards. This is a fireproof cement board, which the actual tile will be affixed to. To complete this step after cementing to the subfloor, a nail is required about every eight inches of space on the board. Cementing Tile To Backer Board Next was actually cementing the tile to the backer board. This required a specialized cement mixed into large pails and then applied it to the back of the tile with a grooved trawl creating sync lines of equal spacing to affix to the backer boards already cemented and nailed to the subfloor. Plastic Space and Grouting Once each tile was applied according to the floor layout, and a 3/16ths plastic spacer inserted in between, the floor was readied for grouting. This is the last step and should be done when the tiles are totally dried and affixed to the backer boards. Mix the grout in the color…

Here in Florida, Hurricane Shutters are available in most hardware stores, in Minnesota, probably not. One problem with boarding or shuttering up is you may inadvertently make yourself a target. Think carefully about the situation before you shutter or board up. Florida Dave I would recommend those bugging in to consider Impact Resistant Windows and Hurricane Shutters. Living The Homesteading Life Dream – Part 2, by 3 AD Scout

…cabinet bases and counter top my wife found on Craigslist for $50. The base cabinets hold most of my nails, screws, and other hardware stores. On the countertop I have some of my chemistry equipment and supplies. We have been looking for used cabinets to hang above the base cabinets but have yet to find the right deal. One of the projects that is on the “to do list” is hanging a piece of plywood from one of the loft floor joist by a piano hinge to make a hanging bulletin board. When not needed the board will be folded up and stored by securing it with barrel slide bolts. I have dry-erase film that I will place on half the board and on the other will have topographical maps of our area along with an aerial image of our homestead. The idea is that we could use this room…

…just can’t manage to pass the test because it has nothing to do with what they have been trained to do. And the example of the first worker will be the one to get promoted, because they are certified by the state. Chain of Command Issues – Most utilities have a general manager, a shop manager, sometimes an in-house engineer, an office manager, and crew bosses for different tasks. There is usually a board that is appointed by the county or the city with several members. And in small-town situations, as you would imagine, an appointment to the board (and employment at the utility) is based on how well known and well connected that you are. So you have a board full of successful local businessmen, who have little spare time and sometimes little knowledge of the utility, trying to balance the budget and keep things running. Employment Issues –…
