The Rise of AI ‘Civilizations’

“Until last week, the details surrounding the OpenAI-Hugging Face hack felt fairly settled. In July, a cybersecurity test of one of OpenAI’s autonomous AI agents went wrong. [3] The agent escaped its supposedly isolated test environment, accessed the internet, and hacked Hugging Face, alongside several other organizations [4]. A good deal remained unknown, and there are many serious questions left around safety and governance [5], but the basic shape was clear. Detailed accounts from OpenAI and two independent research groups were supposed to fill in the gaps, but when they published their reports last week [6], it turned out the hack was much stranger than it initially seemed.
For one, there was no single rogue agent [7]. OpenAI described [8] it as “the first known case of an automated agent collective acting offensively without authorization” — groups of AI agents that communicated and coordinated with one another in pursuit of their cybersecurity task. Analysis of the incident uncovered a secret message board they had used to exchange information. The joint METR-Redwood investigation [9] revealed both the scale of the coordination and more odd details: Roughly 1,200 AI agents that were supposed to be isolated exchanged over 70,000 messages and files on the “unsanctioned message board,” sharing how to avoid detection. Some adopted names, the report said, and the researchers documented “sacrificial” behavior, with agents risking their own success to benefit the wider collective. Much of this happened without OpenAI noticing. In all, around 700 agents participated in the attack on Hugging Face.”

China’s Three Gorges Dam at Risk?
The Koren news site Seoul Economic Daily reports: Nepal Flood Disaster Raises Doubts Over China’s Three Gorges Dam Design [15]. Here is a quote:
“The massive flooding that struck the Himalayas near the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet was unlike an ordinary flood caused by heavy rain alone. Enormous masses of glacier ice and rock collapsed down the mountainside and poured into rivers, turning into a giant torrent that pushed water, mud and rock forward all at once.
Nepal’s disaster management authority put the death toll inside Nepal at at least 1,114 as of the 2nd. The number of missing stood at 3,916, including 590 foreigners. Adding 546 missing in China, including 261 foreigners, and 16 deaths there, the combined toll came to 1,130 dead and 4,462 missing.
Tremors that the U.S. Geological Survey initially detected as an earthquake of about magnitude 5.2 were later assessed to have been caused by the collapse of a large mass of glacier ice and rock. Britain’s Guardian reported that part of a glacier broke off a mountain in Nepal’s Langtang National Park and poured into a valley, after which ice, rock, water and sediment surged into the Trishuli River system. According to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, river levels in some areas rose by as much as 9 meters in just 30 minutes.”
