The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR [1]. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we look at some saber-rattling in Venezuela.

China’s First Crewed Tiltrotor Aircraft Takes Flight

Reader Tim J. sent us this news item from TWZ: China’s First Crewed Tiltrotor Aircraft Is Flying [5]. The article’s intro:

“A new tiltrotor aircraft has appeared in China and is already undergoing flight testing — the first of its kind to take to the air in that country, at least that we know about. While the program remains generally mysterious, it’s further evidence of growing Chinese interest in this class of aircraft. Although previous similar Chinese projects have typically been pitched for civilian missions [6], tiltrotors have clear military applications as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) continues to expand its reach across the Indo-Pacific region and seeks to assert control over the South China Sea.”

Is an Object Entering the Inner Solar System Emitting Its Own Light?

Mysterious Object Hurtling Toward Us From Beyond Solar System Appears to Be Emitting Its Own Light, Scientists Find [10]. An excerpt:

“Last month, astronomers made an exciting discovery, observing an interstellar object [11] — only the third ever observed — hurtling toward the center of the solar system.

The object, dubbed 3I/ATLAS, has caught the attention of Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who has a long track record of making controversial predictions [12] about previous interstellar objects being relics from an extraterrestrial civilization.

While there’s been a growing consensus among astronomers that the latest object is a comet, Loeb has continued to entertain [13] the idea that it may have been sent to us by an intelligent species from outside of the solar system — and he’s far from backing down.

In a blog post [14] over the weekend, Loeb pointed to observations by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which showed a ‘glow of light, likely from a coma, ahead of the motion of 3I/ATLAS towards the Sun.'”
