Preparedness Notes for Thursday — December 21, 2023

It is always gratifying to reach the winter solstice, each year. Just knowing that the days will be getting longer is a relief! Cheer up, folks.

On this day in 1898, having recently discovered polonium [1], future Nobel Prize [2] winners Marie [3] and Pierre Curie [4] discovered the radioactive chemical element radium [5], a silvery white metal that would be used to treat cancer [6].

More than $850,000 worth of prizes have been awarded since we started running this contest. We recently polled blog readers, asking for suggested article topics [19]. Refer to that poll if you haven’t yet chosen an article topic. Round 110 ends on January 31st, so get busy writing and e-mail [20] us your entry. Remember that there is a 1,500-word minimum, and that articles on practical “how-to” skills for survival have an advantage in the judging.
