The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR [1]”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at Weather Forecasts for the Winter of 2022 /23.

Farmers’ Almanac: Extreme Winter Forecast for 2022-23

Steven Cochran — the kind contributor of our regular Month in Precious Metals column — sent the link to this summary: Farmers’ Almanac Releases an Extreme Winter Forecast for 2022-23 [2].  Steven says:  “It looks like you’ll be in the hibernation zone. Folks up there better stock up on the canned food and firewood.”

Extinct Pathogens Ushered The Fall of Ancient Civilizations

Andre spotted this, from Science Alert: Extinct Pathogens Ushered The Fall of Ancient Civilizations, Scientists Say [4].  Thsi articles’s opning:

“Thousands of years ago, across the Eastern Mediterranean, multiple Bronze Age civilizations took a distinct turn for the worse at around the same time.

The Old Kingdom of Egypt [5] and the Akkadian Empire [6] both collapsed, and there was a widespread societal crisis [7] across the Ancient Near East and the Aegean, manifesting as declining populations, destruction, reduced trade, and significant cultural changes.

As usual, fingers have been pointed at climate change [8] and shifting allegiances. But scientists have just found a new culprit in some old bones.

In remains excavated from an ancient burial site on Crete, in a cave called Hagios Charalambos, a team led by archaeogeneticist Gunnar Neumann of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany found genetic evidence of bacteria responsible for two of history’s most significant diseases – typhoid fever [9] and plague [10].”

Will L.A. Hotels Be Forced to House the Homeless?

Reader H.L. sent us this, from the left-wing MSN: Los Angeles voters to decide if hotels will be forced to house the homeless despite safety concerns [14].  H.L.’s comments:

“How to further kill the tourist business.  Most families and individuals would not feel SAFE staying in a motel that also housed the homeless, as some of the homeless are hopped up on drugs and mentally ill.  Saw this on Fox this morning.  Photos of some of the destruction in motel rooms. This is no way to solve the homeless problem in L.A., or any city.  The Gateway drug is usually Pot, which now is very strong with high levels of THC and long term use sometimes leads to psychosis. It is often followed by use of other hardcore drugs and crime.”

JWR’s Comments: In Commiefornia, the mantra of “the greater good” has gone too far. Whatever happened to the oft-quoted, and posted: “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”? I recommend that any SurvivalBlog readers still foolishly lingering in California vote with their feet, ASAP. Flee!

CDC and Social Media Colluded to Censor Covid Vaccine Info

Reader K.S. sent this, in a batch of links: Smoking gun: U.S. government, CDC colluded with Google, Twitter, Facebook to censor important information about experimental covid vaccines [15].

Tiny Modular Nuclear Reactor Gets Approval

Reader C.B. sent this: This Tiny Modular Nuclear Reactor Just Got the Green Light From U.S. Regulators [16].  A pericope:

“In a major step forward for the burgeoning modular nuclear reactor [17] movement, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved all but the final formalities on a tiny reactor design put forth by industry leader NuScale. The July 29 announcement [18] comes after six years of steady work toward regulatory approval.

The combination of small and modular is new for nuclear energy. Decades ago, the first nuclear plants [19] were small because that was simply the limit of the emerging technology at the time. Modular design concepts were in the mix back then because, honestly, what wasn’t in the mix? There were even nuclear-powered concepts for family sedans [20] as far back as the 1950s.”
