The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR [1]”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at upcoming wheat shortages.

World Has Just Ten Weeks’ Worth of Wheat

World has just ten weeks’ worth of wheat left after Ukraine war [2]. The article begins:

“The world has just 10 weeks’ worth of wheat stockpiled after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine [3] disrupted supplies from the “breadbasket of Europe”.

The UN has been warned that global wheat inventories have fallen to their lowest level since 2008 as food supplies are rocked by a “one-in-a-generation occurrence”.

Official government estimates put world wheat inventories at 33pc of annual consumption, but stocks may have slumped to as low as 20pc, according to agricultural data firm Gro Intelligence. It estimates that there are only 10 weeks of global wheat supply left in stockpiles.

Russia and Ukraine account for around a quarter of the world’s wheat exports and the West fears Mr Putin is trying to weaponise food supplies [4]. Russia is on track for a strong wheat harvest this year, cementing Mr Putin’s control over the staple grain as bad weather spoils production in Europe and the US.”

Marine snipers [9]are about to trim their sniper rifle inventory by combining two in one with a new multibarrel weapon that will give shooters three caliber options and replace two existing rifles ― one of which jarheads have been carrying since Vietnam.

Marine Corps Systems Command [10] ― all things gear [11] for Marines ― announced Thursday that the Mk22 Mod 0 advanced sniper rifle has nearly completed testing as it approaches fielding in 2023.

It is a bolt action, precision rifle system. The system part is important. That designation includes a bipod, sound and muzzle flash suppressor and a caliber agnostic 7-by-35 power Precision day optic.

A new sniper rifle for Army, Marines and SOCOM [12]

The rifle will replace both the Mk13 Mod 7 and the M40A6 sniper rifles currently in use.

The Army previously announced that it also would replace its M107 sniper rifle and M2010 enhanced sniper rifle with the Mk22 Mod 0.

The M40A6 is a heavily modified version of the original M40, which first fielded during the Vietnam War and fires a 7.62 mm round.

The A6 model began fielding in 2016.”

Tonga Volcanic Eruption Was as Powerful as Krakatau

And Andre sent us this: Giant Tonga Volcanic Eruption Was as Powerful as Krakatau in 1883, Scientists Reveal [19]. An excerpt:

“An underwater volcano erupted in January near the Pacific nation of Tonga and sent massive pressure waves racing through Earth’s atmosphere, where they lapped the planet several times.

The last volcano to generate such large ripples in the atmosphere was Krakatau in 1883, during one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in recorded history, a new study shows.

“This atmospheric wave event was unprecedented in the modern geophysical record,” said first author Robin Matoza, an associate professor in the Department of Earth Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara.”
