An update from SaraSue:

“With the 2nd well functioning, we have plenty of water now.  The sulfur in the water doesn’t affect doing laundry, taking showers, washing dishes, etc., but I wouldn’t drink it.  The Berkey is constantly filtering water for drinking and cooking.  I even filter water for the dogs.  I’ve been picking up cases of drinking water frequently because the Berkey can’t keep up.  Hopefully, in the near future, a water filtration system will be installed to meet the household needs – just waiting on the local well driller who is extremely busy.  Even in the chaos, I’ve been replenishing the food stores.  Picked up 20 chicks and “keets” (guineas – big tick problem here) and soon will be moving them to their own “barn” (a converted garage with a dirt/gravel floor).  I located an A2/A2 Jersey milk cow, 2 yr old first freshener, $3K, not too far away in North Carolina, but alas, the other barn is not ready yet.  She’d have a couple fenced acres to enjoy and she’s well handled.  I’m of half a mind to pay for her and ask them to hold her for me until I can get the barn cleaned up and a stanchion built.  I’m trying to locate some wethers to graze the other acres just to keep the grass and weeds down.  One thing about Tennessee – grass grows really fast – I just had everything mowed less than 2 weeks ago and it looks like it’s never been mowed.  I was able to locate a “farm hand” this morning at the local feed and supply store – I need a gate installed for the driveway, and have lots of projects on the list.  My dogs are exhausting me by leaving the property pretty regularly.  They’re meeting all the neighbors though!!  I decided to not even try to get a fall garden in.  Met a local Angus beef rancher so I’ll be purchasing freezer beef soon.  Considering growing out a couple of Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs), but may settle on just growing out meat birds for the time being.  Found a large freezer and really got excited about finding a Speed Queen washer/dryer set (American made, great warranty, deep tub, rarely break down).  There’s a shooting range not far from me – I can hear lots of practicing going on and can’t wait to get over there.  I feel like I’m running a race to get the mini farm set up, stocked up, and secured, before SHTF.  So much to do y’all. “

“For readers interested in practicing the skills in the ‘Shooting Drills for WTSHTF’ article, I recommend the the Appleseed program [11]. Appleseed rifle classes teach the ‘Basic’ and ‘Intermediate’ skills mentioned in the article in a weekend. Participants also learn how the colonists’ marksmanship skills played such an important role in American revolutionary war history. Appleseed is a non-profit group, run by volunteers, family-friendly and has classes throughout the year in all 50 states.” Appleseed program. In response to the recent Hi Point .45 carbine review, Tom J. penned this:

“Doesn’t the author think he would have been better served by buying a Carbine Conversion Unit (MechTech or other) that would use the same receiver as his Rock River?  He could potentially have an additional 1911 and use as a carbine, and all his weapons would use the same magazines.  Might be worth it to your readers to include a note.”
