The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR [1]”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at a re-purposed Atlas Missile silo.

Silo, Sweet Silo

First up, Tim J. sent us a link to this at The Natural Building Blog: Underground Home Recycled from a Missile Silo [2]. Here is the article’s opening:

“A Cold War–era missile silo base in Eskridge, KS on 32 acres was converted into an underground home and has come on the market [3]. It was built as an Atlas E missile structure in the early 1950s and was operated by the Air Force in the early 1960s, but was decommissioned in 1965 in favor of newer technology and more robust facilities. Built to withstand bomb blasts, it is made up of epoxy-resin concrete and heavy rebar. The current owners purchased the property in the early 1980s. It had been vacant for some time, with some areas filled with as much as 8 feet of water, but the current owner did his due diligence before purchasing. He explored the underground space with a canoe and flashlight, even diving in, before deciding to take on the project.”

Since I’m sure some readers would ask about it, here is a link to the real estate agent’s listing [4].

Claire Wolfe’s Updated Blogroll

The sagacious libertarian blogger Claire Wolfe has re-launched her blogroll: A note about the forums + recreating the blogroll [6]. I feel honored to have SurvivalBlog included!

COVID is Turning Americans Back to Basics

Another piece suggested by C.B.: Internet trends suggest COVID-19 spurred a return to earlier values and activities [7]. Here is a snippet:

“The use of words referring to basic needs for food, clothing and shelter increased significantly across Google searches, Twitter, internet forums and blogs. For instance, Google searches increased by 344% for “grow vegetables” and by 207% for “sewing machine,” while Twitter mentions of “Home Depot” increased by 266%.”

Mouseguns, Then and Now

UK Firms Make Vaccines Mandatory

D.S.V. sent us this: ‘No Jab, No Job’ As UK Firms Make Vaccines Mandatory [9]. This news story begins:

“Companies in Britain have been tasking law firms to craft “no jab, no job” contracts that would bar prospective employees from being hired unless they have been vaccinated against the Chinese coronavirus.

While the government has publicly claimed that it has no intentions of requiring domestic vaccine passports, ministers have admitted that private businesses may take up the mantle of imposing it on the British public.

Speaking to the Financial Times, law firms said [10] that they have already been contacted by companies, including care homes and multinational corporations, which are looking to draw up contracts that would require employees to be inoculated against the virus.”

New Zealand Set for Second Gun Confiscation

Never Enough: New Zealand Set for SECOND Gun Confiscation [12]. JWR’s Comments:  The list of prices they are paying [13] to buy up these now-prohibited guns is absurdly arbitrary. Seemingly, they used the last-advertised prices to calculate many of these. Consider: $10,000 NZ Dollars for an FN SCAR, but only $3,000 NZD for a FN-FAL?  To make it clear what is really going on, the standard price should be: “One Bowl of Pottage.”

Nancy Pelosi Proves That Walls Work

Lastly, SurvivalBlog reader Nathan Hail sent us some humorous proof that a Great Wall can be constructed quickly [15].  (Remember my prediction about an expanded security perimeter for the Capitol [16]?  These guys build walls quicker than the East German Vopos. Three miles, in just a few days!)

You can send your news tips to JWR [1]. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact [17] form.) Thanks!

With the completion speed, a suspicious person might suspect some of the materials and some of the builders were scheduled:
* prior to January 6th 2020… or
* prior to early November 2020… or
* prior to ‘this phase of this Economic Lock-Down’ over a year ago.

I lived in Topeka for a decade in the early ’00s. It is possibly I’m misremembering, but it seems that silo property came on the market several times.

#5 Comment By Telesilla of Argos On February 25, 2021 @ 1:42 pm

The story of the silo is informative… I was especially interested given my own thoughts about the value of tornado shelters and shelters that might be important in the event of a solar weather event or solar excursion.

When the recovery effort was undertaken at this project, a million gallons of water were pumped out, followed by 80 wheelbarrow trips to remove mud and gunk! The elevation isn’t all that high, land is reasonably level, and I wonder about the water table.

It would be interesting to hear from others who have experience with underground shelters.

#6 Comment By Anon On February 25, 2021 @ 3:28 pm

I have been to this missile base outside of Topeka. It is awesome, and in conversation with the owner, his biggest concern was making sure the water pumps were in working order. If I recall, the solar was feed into making sure the pumps worked. The space is huge, and it is an awesome place!

The State of the Union? See the link below with a history of dates for when these had been scheduled in the past. If the address is not given by Sunday, the SOTU will be the latest since the time of President Reagan. I’m not hearing any news about when this will be firmly scheduled… I am not sure I can bring myself to listen after the theft of the election, but I am concerned for our national security about all the signals of diminished cognitive capacity.

[19]

Perhaps there won’t be a Statue of the Union Address this year? Or are they trying to justify having a stand-in?

It may be a virtual event given references to security concerns. It seems like a strange excuse given the security services that have successfully been provided to so many Presidents over so many years, but this is what they’re saying… I wonder if it’s a cover to give Biden an out related to a publicly delivered speech. If he offers a video version, they can edit and polish the presentation. Somehow I just wouldn’t be surprised if this happened!

You know… It’s just shameful that a political party (doesn’t matter which party) would put up a candidate who was sufficiently infirmed as not to be able to carry out the responsibilities of the office.

In addition to my definite disagreements with the political positions of Hillary Clinton, I was deeply concerned about the health questions surrounding her. Joe Biden’s health issues appear to be far more serious.

It’s hard for me to get over the fact that anyone could desire the office so much that it would be pursued despite illness or other degradation sufficient to prevent the discharge of duties — and that there would be no intervention to stop this. I have often thought that the people in his close circle should be investigated for elder abuse.

“HUGE DEVELOPMENT: Georgia GOP Senate Passes Bill Requiring ID for Absentee Voting”

From the article: “John Fredericks: Last night the Georgia GOP led senate passed a bill requiring absentee ID – identification for all absentee ballots.”

Since we must provide identification for so many other activities in life, there should be no objection to this with regard to voting!

John Fredericks is launching a radio station with programming to include Steve Bannon. Believe this is just around the corner now. Fredericks is launching an AM station in the Atlanta area.

There is also news on the election integrity front coming from Arizona.

Israel is leading the way for the Beast System with it’s Green Passport. The Anti-Christ will be a Jewish Person. This is a very important video to listen to:

[22]

#21 Comment By Capt Nemo On February 26, 2021 @ 12:44 am

NO! The antichrist will be a roman, as his beast comes out of the sea. The false prophet’s beast comes out of the land, and therefore is Jewish. The Roman Catholic church is the great whore that rides the second beast.

#22 Comment By Anonymous On February 26, 2021 @ 1:01 am

The current Pope is a Jesuit. Jesuits are often Crypto Jews. Another name for them are Conversos. Conversos, are Jews who to escape persecution and the Inquistion in Spain, converted to Catholicism. Therefore, if the Pope is the False Prophet, which is what I do believe, then He is Jewish. I do not believe the Pope is the Anti-Christ.

Additionally, Jewish people won’t accept a Messiah that isn’t Jewish, nor one that appears to be coming out of the Catholic Church.

The Messiah that the World will accept will be Jewish. But For Christians who are awake, this Messiah will be the anti-Christ because of his hatred towards believers in Jesus and eventually his hatred of Jews who refuse to worship him.

People in this world have focussed on Catholicism and Islam and have forgotten that Judaism has a Last Days scenario. It would behoove them to study what Talmudic Jews believe about the Last Days. It’s far more serious matter with dire implications for the whole world.

#23 Comment By Joe On February 26, 2021 @ 4:45 am

Does it make any difference to you who the anti Christ May be? The results will be the same.

Trusting “Science” is trusting man AND According the the [24] (the English translation is below the Hebrew) science and Technology will be a part of the Coming Messiah’s control mechanism/society. They put science and technology above God the Father and Creator. The Kol Ha Tor is the Vilna of Gaon’s treatise on the Footsteps to their Messiah, which of there are two: Messiah Ben Joseph who comes first and then Messiah Ben David. Do not be deceived, their interpretations are not the same at all as the Christian interpretation. It is a fascinating read, though, if you know your scriptures. Further, remember that Joseph in Egypt was a type of Messiah to the Hebrew children, but was an anti-Christ to the Egyptian gentiles…He took away all of their money, lands and then enslaved them all for the need for food!

Were 600K COVID hospitalizations preventable simply through diet and exercise? TWO THIRDS of people hospitalized for COVID were obese or had diabetes, high blood pressure or heart failure, study finds
Tufts University researchers looked at data on more than 900,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients
30% were obese, 26% had high blood pressure, 21% had diabetes had heart failure

Researchers say two thirds – or about 600,000 – of these hospitalizations could likely have been prevented if it weren’t for the underlying conditions
By Natalie Rahhal U.S. Health Editor

Published: 14:07 GMT, 25 February 2021 | Updated: 14:30 GMT, 25 February 2021

Americans with four conditions – obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart failure – account for two-thirds of all COVID-19 hospitalizations in the US, a new study estimates.

All four conditions are preventable – and those hospitalizations likely would have been too, the Tufts University researchers write.

They write that two thirds of 906,849 hospitalizations for COVID-19 – or about 600,000 of them – were attributable to the four conditions, and could have been prevented if those patients already been in poor health.

People who have these conditions will get priority access to coronavirus vaccines, but the shots come too late to spare hundreds of thousands of people from hospitalization for COVID-19 and likely thousands from dying of the infection.

The researchers urge doctors to not only advise their at-risk patients to get COVID-19 vaccines, but make changes to their diet and exercise habits to protect themselves from coronavirus.

Two thirds of COVID-19 hospitalizations were ‘attributable’ to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes or heart failure, meaning they likely could have been avoided if the patients hadn’t had these preventable conditions, the Tufts University study estimates. (More information in the article)

Good point Avalanche Lily. I had heard about the virus possibly targeting certain blood types, but it did not occur to me that it could be designed to target certain medications and supplements that the more unhealthy in society rely on to treat symptoms of chronic diseases. What can be done with microscopic weapons and nanotechnology is truly a huge threat.

#29 Comment By David ‘n’ Goliath On February 26, 2021 @ 1:12 am

It is true that many people that get Covid have underlying problems such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart failure, like you mention, but getting a Covid “vaccine” is not the solution to any of these problems. Lifestyle change is what is needed by many people. Poor diet is the cause of many medical problems today and the fact that more of the farmland is being switched to GMO crops is making the problem worse. A vaccine is a step (a giant step) in the wrong direction. There are many health researchers that have pointed this out. Dr. Judy Mikovits is just one of them. Dr. Tenpenny, Dr. Cahil, Dr. Madej … and the list goes on, are others.

For some reason this passage comes up.

Acts 2:41-47 New International Version (NIV)

41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Welcome back, brother.

The linked video for WranglerStar = ~~10 Ways You Can Stay Warm When The Power Goes Out~~ could be watched to gain knowledge, or even to review important known techniques. The video is less than 25 minutes long; WranglerStar knows how to make easy to watch, and informative videos.

Unfortunately, the people in charge of our ‘Utility provided energy sources’ have decided, the Earth is in a period of Global Warming. They think the USA needs to become reliant on UNRELIABLE ‘green energy’ now days.

Don’t believe the FAKE NEWS about the ‘energy crisis’ ~ such as what just occurred in Texas. The planners, planned for Global Warming. When the ‘Cold Snap’ hit Texas, people died as a consequence. Energy providing Utilities by LAWS and by incentives are building ‘green energy’ ‘power’ plants. = The ‘new’ ideas are unreliable.
……. “Rolling Blackouts is NOT a kookburger/Californian idea. It’s a technique to use, when the Energy providing Utilities can NOT provide enough energy to everyone.

People have to plan for the emergencies; especially now days. SurvivalBlog recommendations are a good source of needed knowledge. … WranglarStar [at the end of the video], like SurvivalBlog, stressed the need for Charity, and taking care of your neighbors, if needed.

You are so right. I wish emergency preparedness were a part of our culture as a whole. Emergencies happen. …and they happen in all aspects of life. Sometimes these events are relatively minor, and sometimes they’re quite severe. It’s just a good idea to accomplish advance planning.

I can’t even tell you how many FEMA courses and in person training my son has received. He has already started his training for his pilots license. A bit scary but he can fly a glider at 55mph solo at age 14! It is a great organization! IN the NorthEast, we are seeing many people fleeing the city for country. The Civil Air Patrol is being called in constantly. Towns people know it isn’t save to kayak on lakes in Winter. The people moving from other states don’t. Civil Air Patrol are constantly being called in for help. Sad really that grown adults don’t realize the safety hazards of canoeing in the NorthEast in Winter.

It’s all well and good that the community steps forth and helps their neighbors, but this begs the question of why there is this need. Seemingly rational people resist the need to take care of themselves even with history and the fact that prudent people do not suffer as much during emergencies. They call us Hoarders, Preppers and Survivalist with derogatory and dismissive language. “FEMA will be there if needed.” What do they learn from their experiences? To me very little. Has personal responsibility been removed from their education by our : Educational Intuitions, Parental education, lack of deductive reasoning and common sense?
(I think that was all rhetorical.)
But people have it too easy living off the backs of their forefathers sacrifices, and promises of Nirvana from useless politicians pandering to their need to be taken care of and pated on the back for their votes. On an up beat note; I, like Murphy , am just to much of an optimist.

Joe!
From your post: “They call us Hoarders, Preppers and Survivalist with derogatory and dismissive language.”

I believe they do this because anyone who prepares challenges the very foundations on which those who are not prepared have built their literal lives. They cannot cope with the reality of risk, and do not want anyone to challenge illusions with which they have surrounded themselves.

As for relying on emergency provisions, services or rescue from a federal agency… Well. In so far as they can provide assistance and save lives, I would thankful for life-saving benefits conveyed. But… I wouldn’t count on their capacity to accomplish either of those objectives. My confidence level in federal operations is very, very low. Federal intervention should not counted as the first line of defense against the consequences of disaster.

Should get a couple feet of snow in the next 48 hours, but more concerning is the wind. I ran around doing all those things I normally do, should we lose electricity. I tried out a new wool blanket on my bed last night. If you sandwich an inexpensive 95% wool blanket between 2 soft blankets or sheets, you don’t have to deal with the scratchiness of it. You don’t need a Pendleton blanket!! I didn’t wash it, just put it straight on the bed. The less you wash them, the longer they last. It made a huge difference last night in keeping warm with the heat turned way down and I actually, accidentally, slept in!

If this man/woman gets confirmed as assistant secretary of Health and Human Services like the JoeBama Administration wants, how are we going to recover our society from this transgender travesty? It’s horrifying. Dr. Paul is frank.

I heard a small portion of Senator Paul’s questioning… He cited information that suggests that many young people who believe they are transgendered at one point in life then later discover that they no longer believe this about themselves. According to Rand Paul, a significant amount of this resolves. The true human tragedy is that if they are treated with therapies that produce irreversible results, there is no U-turn in this life road. The prospect of a permanently injured young person is horrifying. I am not speaking to the matter of adults who make their own decisions (whether or not these seem like a good idea to the rest of us). In this case, we are talking about minors. We are talking about children.

That’s the point: children.
This is horrific. It is child abuse.

Children are expendable same as us adults. “They” are doing hundreds of downright stupid things to prod us into action or something. They’re flaunting it with purpose. They know no boundaries to reset the world.

I can see them sitting around having a contest as to who can float the most ridiculous idea and laughing. They know half the population will lap it up.

Has enough yet?

Yes. True. Child abuse.

I believe that this is the prelude to the Tribulation. Make peace with Jesus of Nazareth and accept Him as Lord. Accept His forgiveness. It is way past time.

“I believe that this is the prelude to the Tribulation.” Yes, this is like a freshman level Tribulation 101 and then the sophomore, junior and senior levels will then follow. It may happen so fast or in such rapid succession that it will be a blur to many people. The only permanent solution to the problem is as you have stated to “Make peace with Jesus of Nazareth and accept Him as Lord. Accept His forgiveness.”

I’ve been watching Covid related info for the last week and it’s making me sick. Guess I need to see the Great Physician.

Pole Reversal Caused Sudden Climate Change Is Wrong:

Did you not know that the Neanderthals drove the Earth in gasoline vehicles and their factories produced carbon dioxide?

And did you know the gigantic animal population expelled large volumes of grass based gas which caused the population to don masks?

It’s all true and Congress will soon release the information for K-12 consumption.

Yes which is TOTALLY why all we little people need to move to synthetic meat. Those who are More Equal Than Others, of course, will continue to eat their actual meat because if they only double-mask those animals’ backsides, it will catch the emissions, atone for their carbon sins and make up for all of the private jet travel.

Or something.

Oh good, Ber. You have been taking tour Snark Supplements. Or, eating Snark Soup. Or, pouring Snark Syrup on your waffles.

Okay…I’ll stop.

No doubt St, Funogas will chime in with some wicked wordplay now.

Carry on

Snark Steaks, of course.

Organic, free-range, non-GMO, gluten-free…and double-masked.

in regards to tribulation I expect that there will be another war in the middle east with Israel getting hit with over 150,000 missiles and the Dome of the rock getting destroyed. Israel has all the materials needed to rebuild the Temple Mount stored, so this will happen very rapidly after the war.
