Preparedness Notes for Monday — November 23, 2020

On November 23rd, 1980, a 7.2-magnitude quake [1] struck southern Italy killing more than 3,000 people. The casualty toll was probably so high because the tremor struck during Sunday night mass, as many residents sat in churches that crumbled in the quake. The quake was centered in Eboli, south of Naples. In nearby Balvano, children were preparing to receive their first communion at the 1,000-year-old Conza Della Comapgna church. The church was demolished and killed dozens of people, including 26 children.

Please keep in mind that I will be traveling for the month of December, so if you want to order any antique cartridge guns from Elk Creek Company [2], then get your order in before that month-long hiatus. Thanks!

Today we present another product review written by our ever-faithful Field Gear Editor,  Pat Cascio.

Speaking of Earthquakes and Docu movies about them, I reminded myself of a pretty good film about the December, 7th,1988 Armenia Earthquake that killed over 25,000 people. The film is called ( appropriately enough ) ” Earthquake”. And no, Charlton Heston is not in it. I was compelled to watch it because I had no recollection of the event. It is a well made film and has great production value. Pretty sure I won’t go another Dec, 7, with out remembering that terrible event. It should be a sobering reminder to ALL of us that STILL live in California, that this kind of thing is always a possibility. Prepare accordingly. Currently, this movie is being offered on Amazon Prime, and there is a trailer. Follow the link….. [3]

Calling all radioheads.

Last night I tested a home built 6 element UHF OWA (Optimized Wideband Antenna) based upon the 2 meter OWA antenna specs in this PDF by simply scaling the measurements down, and then fine tuning the antenna for the desired range. I am very surprised at how well this worked out. The SWR stays inside of 2:1 from 421 to 467.000Mhz! It was fined tuned to achieve what I would consider the most useful bandwidth. It is essentially 3 to 4 yagi’s in one. This means the antenna farm is smaller and more manageable in terms of deal with coupling and interference with other antennas. The band width is greater than the 10 megs of my VHF version. The average again is more than 10 Dbi.

Next might be a 12 element UHF antenna built to spec contained in this PDF. I am looking for a narrower beam width, not necessarily gain. Usually the higher the gain, the narrower the band with. These antennas have full, or wider coverage. The 12 element boosts coverage from 415 to 455Mhz, and 14 plus dbi. The gain of this antenna is an advantage as well, as it helps punch through pine forests that usually greatly attenuate UHF signals by almost half relative to VHF. While UHF is not far off the beaten path, it is under utilized. These OWA designs in UHF allow one to utilize this uncrowded band. And this is a relatively compact yagi because it is UHF. It has a beam length of only 6.6 feet in length. And because these are direct connect, and do not require the invention of a gamma match, it is easier to build.

“The two principles to understand before reading is that despite your level of training and equipment, others with you likely will not have the same and second, the organized Left in the US will be following this exact model.”

It is a long, long read…

It would be nice to find an electronic copy in English of the original?
