JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books, and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how-to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food and storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This week the focus is on some unusual MRE components and MRE replacements. (See the Gear & Grub section.)

Gear & Grub:

Well, now that it has been three+ years, we can conclude that they weren’t just a fad. These practical cookers are still amazingly popular, for good reason: Instant Pot Aura Pro 11-in-1 Multicooker Slow Cooker, 8 Qt, 11 One-Touch Programs [13]

o  o  o

And now, some unusual MRE components and MRE replacements. These aren’t the old 1980s or 1990s MREs that you probably remember. (Pictured above):

This has some of the beloved chocolate-peanut butter packs: MRE Peanut Butter Spread Combo – 24 Pac [14]k

o  o  o

I’ve heard of soldiers breaking into sealed Cold Weather MREs, just to get at these: First Strike Bars (Cran-Raspberry, Chocolate, Apple-Cinnamon & Mocha) FSR/MRE Component [15]

o  o  o

These are popular with long-distance cross-country skiers (among others) for their “get stranded overnight” bags: MET-Rx Big 100 Colossal Protein Bars, Healthy Meal Replacement, Snack, Support Energy,Gluten Free,Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough,Vitamin A,Vitamin C,Vitamin D, and Zinc, 100g, 9 Count [16]

o  o  o

And although a bit spendy, these new MRE components are said to have a fan following:  XMRE Pepperoni Pizza (12 [17])

Featured Antique Gun of the Week

Our featured antique gun of the week is an Adams .455 Eley British Army Mark III (1878) Double Action  Revolver [18].  Like most other pre-1899 guns, it can be mailed or shipped directly to your doorstep without any paperwork or FFL dealer involvement. (Be sure to check your state and local laws before ordering.) Take a look at the many recently-added guns at the Elk Creek Company [19]store. Because of some upcoming travel, the store will begin a month-long hiatus in two days, so order soon.

Wow! The young lady singing on Britain’s Got Talent does indeed have tons of it. That was an AMAZING performance. I never watch those shows, so thanks for sharing it here.

I received an instant pot for Christmas from my wife. Kind of a weird gift but ever skeptical I decided to give it a try. First item, pinto beans, 6 yrs old hard as buckshot. 32 minutes of cooking and they were soft and perfect for mashing them into refried beans. I next tried carnitas. I read the directions and found out that you can brown the meat in the pot, added water and spices and in a very short time the meat was cooked to perfection. Wow, I said to the wife, thank you for opening my eyes.
So here are a few highlights; 1. It cooks quickly so in a grid down scenario running the generator for a short time is practical. 2. Since it draws only 1000 watts it is no problem for my solar system. 3. It holds enough to feed a number of people. 4. If you know how to make soups, stews, roasts, chickens etc. This is the way to go as it saves a lot of time.
So what next? I will be scouring all the unusual places for a 2nd and 3rd pot to add to my preps.

Use steam setting for fresh beets in the instant pot. Put the washed beets on a trivet. I keep the greens on as well. Timing will depend on size of beets.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad was given to me years ago. It was a life-changing book for me. It’s not for everyone, but if you are willing to follow the advice given you can change your life too. I would say about 95% of people are “Poor Dad” and the remainder is the “Rich Dad”. Pick it up and read it. It might change your life too.

Some items I do not recommend are, Wise Foods fruit pouches and Alpine Aire fruit pouches. I have had multiple pouches from both companies that lost their seal, and the contents were destroyed. I even found bad packaging in the store displays. Check that those foods are crunchy and mushy if you do buy them, and check again before use. I’ve lost 8 pouches of the Wise, and 16 of the Alpine.

Good morning

I ended up getting the “Crockpot “ version of this pressure cooker. Love it!!
Last week I threw in a prime rib and some gravy, bam! 20 minutes later we had THE BEST dinner ever!! Tasted like the best pot roast you could ever imagine! My brother even offered to pay me if I would make that for him every week . LOL

Have a Rockin great day!
