SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt

This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. [1] (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest. We also mention companies of interest to preppers and survivalists that are located in the American Redoubt region. Today, we focus on the dramatic rescue of a drowning man, on the Snake River. (See the Idaho section.)

Idaho

Mountain Home family helps save the life of a man drowning in the Snake River [2]. The article begins:

“The day started as a typical day for Rachelle Ruffing and her family; They had planned a trip to Twin Falls after their family dog had passed away. They decided to spend the day paddleboarding the Snake River before their dinner reservations. They headed to Pillar Falls and spent some time there before heading back, but things took a turn when they noticed an empty kayak right behind them.

“And I just made an assumption or conclusion that somebody was supposed to be in that kayak, and then I just waited, and I started paddling as fast as I could in my paddleboard to get over to the kayak,” Ruffing said.

The kayak belonged to Brendon Lease, who was on a road trip with some friends. They made a stop in Twin Falls where Lease decided to go kayaking, but the currents in Pillar Falls cause his kayak to flip over.

A couple of minutes after noticing the empty kayak, Ruffing says they spotted Lease’s body, by that time his lungs had filled with water and Ruffing says his body was already blue.

After locating Lease, Ruffing’s daughter’s boyfriend immediately jumped into the water to retrieve the body.”

Pandemic and Riot Fallout: Businesses Looking To Relocate To Central Orego [9]n. A snippet:

“Pat Kesgard of Compass Commercial real estate says businesses in urban areas like, Portland, Seattle and L.A. are moving here to avoid stringent pandemic restrictions, and, in some cases, issues related to the demonstrations. Kesgard says they’re having a hard time keeping up with the demand. Multi-family housing is also a big draw for investors. He says, however, restaurant and retail properties are still a question mark. He says most businesses are managing rent payments, which is good sign.”

Governor praises ‘multi-billion dollar’ F.E. Warren nuclear missile replacement project [13]. Here’s an excerpt:

“The Air Force says that the ICBMs will be replaced with “ground based strategic deterrent” (GBSD).

‘Military construction is phased ahead of the actual deployment of GBSD to allow time for initial beddown, ensure facilities are ready for any unique mission equipment, and support training and operational certification prior to the first sites obtaining operational status at each wing,’ the Air Force says. ‘Using infrastructure at current locations allows both the Minuteman III and GBSD weapons systems to continue meeting all nuclear surety and safety standards throughout their operational lives, particularly during the transition period.'”

CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver are relatively straightforward and easy to learn, and can save lives in cases like these.

I taught both to my ROTC students in the mid-80s, hundreds of them, and have often wondered how many lives were saved by those students.

As for myself, I only used the Heimlich Maneuver once, at a resort dining room where a fellow diner was choking. But once was sufficient to justify the training.

Isn’t that the truth? I was stationed there a long, long time ago. Before my time, they had started a facility to load them on trains and send them out and about. To prove things tend to go full circle, anyone remember GLCM?

I find it irritating that so many news pages now will not load without signing up, both the Billings Gazette and Jackson Hole News fail to meet expectations. I’ll need to make a list of sites now to not waste my time trying to visit.
