Tactical Technology for TEOTWAWKI – Part 3, by J.M.

It’s All in Your Hands

The core component of my field technology system is what most people would call a cell phone or smartphone, but I prefer to call a Mobile Information, Communications and Control System (MICCS), or just mobile device for short. Why not call it a cell phone? – because the cellular network will most likely be one of the first things to go in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. Granted, you could potentially create your own cellular network [1] if you have the money and expertise, but for the purposes of this article I’m going to assume you’re operating without any cellular (and hence, Internet) connectivity. As a result you don’t need to worry about what kind of cellular connectivity your mobile device supports.

You should also consider the availability of GPS post-disaster – it may or may not function, depending on the specific event. Unless something like a CME impacted the GPS satellites directly, GPS signals will most likely continue operating for some period of time post-TEOTWAWKI. Exactly how long is subject to some debate – the older systems required updates from ground stations every few weeks, or the signals would start to drift, reducing their accuracy. The newer satellites are supposed to be able to maintain their precision for a lot longer, so accurate signals may be available for several years after an event. For the purposes of this article I’m going to put GPS in the ‘nice to have but not critical’ category.

Here are the requirements I came up with for my MICCS mobile device:

The device I ultimately settled on is a Ulefone Armor X5 [4] – it met or exceeded all of my requirements, and you can find it for around $100-$150. A slightly less expensive option would be the Ulefone Armor X7 [5], which has less RAM and flash memory; a more expensive option is the Ulefone Armor 3WT [6] which offers a lot more RAM and flash memory, a 10,500mAh battery and a built-in 2W 400MHz-470MHz radio. Blackview and Doogee are other manufacturers that make some decent rugged mobile devices. Note that these tend to be bulkier than most mainstream consumer mobile devices, so you’re probably not going to be carrying it in the back pocket of your skinny jeans. If you have a friend in military procurement and a lot of money, another option is the Samsung S20 Tactical Edition [7] (it’s ‘Proven by operators’, according to Samsung 8-))

If you can’t afford a new device or want to be able to switch your current device from slim to rugged, you may be able to find a rugged case. Seacosmo [8] makes rugged cases for several mainstream devices, and Juggernaut [9] makes rugged cases that are used by the military. But you may need to practice your web search techniques to see if anyone makes a rugged case for your specific device.

If there’s no rugged case available for your existing device, you should at least provide some way to protect it from water damage. The simplest way is to just put it inside a ziplock baggie, or you can get a fancier waterproof case [10]. Lanyos [11] makes a decent waterproof case that works with a number of different phones and allows you to use the camera, and companies like Otterbox and Pelican make various rugged waterproof device cases. One potential issue with using an external case is that you may need to remove the phone to access buttons and ports, which can slow things down a lot when you’re trying to deploy it in the field. Some waterproof cases allow you to ‘play through’, which means you can use the touchscreen while it’s in the case. Surprisingly I’ve found that I can use the touchscreen on my current phone while it’s inside a ziplock baggie.

How you carry your mobile device will depend on what type of device you have and how you plan on using it. The simplest solution is to carry it in a pocket or belt pouch [12], but that means you’re going to need two hands to take it out and use it. I prefer to mount my mobile device either on the inside forearm of my support arm or on a fold-down ‘tray’ if I’m wearing a chest rig (like when I’m playing paintball). For my forearm I use an armband with rubber straps [13], since my Armor X5 is waterproof and I don’t have to worry about it getting wet or beat-up, but they make waterproof ones [14] that still allow you to use the touchscreen. For a chest rig I use a fold-down tray from Lancer Tactical [15] that I’ve modified to fit my phone, and Juggernaut [16] makes one that works with their cases. You could also use a chest-mounted fold-down admin pouch like the ones from Crye Precision [17], Tactical Tailor [18] or Savior Equipment [19]. Having it mounted on your forearm or chest allows you to operate your mobile device one-handed.

Depending on how you plan on using your device you may want to consider a larger tablet either in place of a smaller mobile device or to complement it. An 8” tablet [20] has roughly 2.5x the screen area of a 5.5” mobile device, which can make reviewing and sharing things like maps a lot easier, or you can go even bigger with a 10” tablet [21]. One caveat with tablets – for some reason the prices on ruggedized tablets are orders of magnitude higher than phone devices, so I’d recommend just getting a regular tablet and putting it in a rugged case. I’ve used an old aluminum memo-sized storage clipboard [22] as a hard case for an 8.9” tablet.

Unless you are a true techno-weenie, a smart phone is always a big compromise. As people found out at the Chinese Olympics, you are never in complete control of one if it is used in any sort of public network. If you are going to go to all that trouble, I would suggest packet radio instead. Chances are you are mostly going to use it for local comms anyways. But if you needed long haul, you can run the packet modem on HF with the right rig instead.

No method of comms is truly 100% secure. But why make it easier for tptb. Sending encrypted packet will make it more difficult than it is worth for NSA to waste resources dealing with, cuz most of us aren’t the sort of big fish they are looking to snoop. If you are feeling particularly zesty, use encrypted packet in combo with spread spectrum and really mess them up.

That’s why you should always use a VPN. It creates a secure tunnel to your service.

benjammin – I’m focusing on a post-TEOTWAWKI scenario, and I definitely recommend keeping your device(s) off of the Internet or any network you don’t completely control.

There is a device that was advertised on this blog some time ago. I forgot the name, but was basically a line-of-sight radio system. It had an antennae and the reviews seemed to be good. Granted, it had limited range, but at a price of $50 for 2, it would possibly be better than nothing.

My concerns with the Ulephone phones mentioned center around their being Chinese-made. With all the recent attention to the way that the CCP is so deeply entrenched in their manufacturing industries I would be shocked if there was NOT some kind of embedded spying capability in any electronic device made in China. The price and build quality seem good, especially compared to the stratospheric prices for Apple or Samsung offerings but I am not sure the risk of having my personal information and location compromised is acceptable.

I think everyone is missing the point of the “cell phone”. I think J.M. is using the phone as a mobile command center for his various wifi enabled devices. You could probably tear out the cellular antenna and it would still fulfill 90% of it’s intended role. I could be wrong but this is the way I interpret this part of the article.

Can definitely see the practicality of having a decent case.I use an OtterBox

Haven’t really thought about the practicality of a smartphone after a grid down situation. Maybe downloading some local maps ,compass app ? dope card ?

Have a small power bank in the bug out bag that will charge the phone twice. Always thought after a week the phone would be useless. Like somebody else mention two way radios or a ham set up seems to have more practicality although there’s the issue with repeaters . . . . .

Always willing to be educated. Will continue reading 😉

As Just Some Guy indicated, I’m talking about using a cell phone in a grid-down scenario where the Internet most likely doesn’t exist anymore, so any spyware that may exist on your mobile device couldn’t ‘call home’ even if it wanted to. When using my devices under current conditions I never install a SIM card and I only connect to networks that I directly control. The only time I connect them to the Internet is when I want to update the installed apps or download updated external data like maps.

Yeah, fine, but until then it is potentially sharing everything? GPS locations, photos of cache sites, grocery lists. What about apps like EchoLink, isn’t it possible to be sharing repeater locations and frequencies with CCP, or anyone else that could hijack a phone?
In a grid-down situation the internet will still exist, even if you can’t access it. I think devices like Stingray are only the visible tip of the iceberg as far as data collection, my suspicion is that what we the public know is generations behind government ability.
One thing that I demand is a removable battery for the ultimate control over when and where I can be tracked.
Like the old poster in Fox Mulder’s office (X-Files) says, Trust No One.
There are enough cheap laptop options that you could have one that is never connected to the internet with most of these capabilities stashed away in your Faraday box. USB drives are insanely cheap for what you have in such a tiny package – I keep one for important documents, one for photos, another is just music files…I keep supply lists, maps, various scenario plans, recipes for anything I can make, homestead instructions for my survivors – practically everything I can think of that might be important has a digital copy saved on a USB drive in my Faraday box.

BinWY – that’s why I recommend never putting a SIM card in your prep device(s), and only connect to WiFi networks that you completely control (like the field network I described). After you’ve done the initial setup of the device, installed all of the apps and downloaded your offline content there’s really no reason to connect to the Internet again, unless you want to update your apps. If you do want to update them and are concerned about info on your device getting out, you can install the apps on a different clean device with no sensitive data on it, update the apps when necessary, extract the APK files for the updates and transfer them to your prep device, then run the APK. You can use a microSD card to transfer new/updated files on the device, and store it in a Faraday bag/box when not in use.
