Carlos Hathcock was quite the country boy.

“I like shooting, and I love hunting. But I never did enjoy killing anybody. It’s my job. If I don’t get those bastards, then they’re gonna kill a lot of these kids dressed up like Marines. That’s the way I look at it.”

The most memorable part of “Marine Sniper” was, of course, Carlos taking out an enemy sniper by shooting him with a bullet that passed right through the guy’s own rifle scope. The second most memorable part of the book for me was when Carlos was inching forth through an open field to take out a high-ranking NVA officer when he inches onto a bed of killer ants who began attacking him. In the greatest display of self-discipline I’ve ever seen described in print, Carlos just lay there and let those ants make lunch out of him. Most of us would have bolted for the jungle, glad to have the NVA machine gun us and put us out of our misery. 🙂

If you haven’t read any of the books about Carlos Hathcock, he was a decent guy with an incredible story.

The NVA had a reward on his head and referred to him as White Feather due to the feather in wore in his cap.
