Thats not an MP 40 on the Russians back it is a folder Ppsh-41 note the square rear of the gun! Just an observation. Cool picture though and a good read referencing the pictures time frame is Heaven and Hell by Martin Poppel (The war diary of a german paratrooper)

Interesting fact that the photo was doctored before publishing to remove the multiple watches the soldier waving flag had plundered from the Germans

Yes, I’ve read that. And note that AFTER the photo doctoring, the other soldier is shown wearing ONLY two wristwatches.
