JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food and storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This week the emphasis is on earthquake preparedness. (See the Books, Movies, Instructional Videos & Vlogs, and Gear & Grub sections.)

The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II. Here is a description of the book:

“The astonishing, never before told story of the greatest rescue mission of World War II—when the OSS set out to recover more than 500 airmen trapped behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia.

During a bombing campaign over Romanian oil fields, hundreds of American airmen were shot down in Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia. Local Serbian farmers and peasants risked their own lives to give refuge to the soldiers while they waited for rescue, and in 1944, Operation Halyard was born. The risks were incredible. The starving Americans in Yugoslavia had to construct a landing strip large enough for C-47 cargo planes—without tools, without alerting the Germans, and without endangering the villagers. And the cargo planes had to make it through enemy airspace and back—without getting shot down themselves.

Classified for over half a century for political reasons, the full account of this unforgettable story of loyalty, self-sacrifice, and bravery is now being told for the first time ever. The Forgotten 500 is the gripping, behind-the-scenes look at the greatest escape of World War II.”

Movies:

For anyone living in an earthquake zone, reader E.M. suggested the documentary When A City FallsE.M. Notes: “This would include Alaska and most of the West Coast, as well as the area surrounding the New Madrid, Missouri fault. The documentary concerns the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. This documentary is extraordinary and it paints a vivid picture of devastation that most people can only imagine. Beyond the destruction of buildings and the impact on lives, the results of liquefaction following an earthquake, a danger of which many people are blissfully unaware, are depicted quite well. I also suggest that everyone living in the Pacific Northwest who has access to Amazon Prime watch the documentary, Shockwave: Surviving North America’s Biggest Disaster. It concerns the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the single greatest earthquake threat on the North American continent.

  2. I bought these boots when they were on sale on Black Friday at Sam’s Club. I live in farm boots and have purchased and worn Bogs and other higher priced boots. The moment I put these on my feet they were so comfortable. They are water proof and have a thick sole. I even wear them off farm for some errands because they are so comfortable. It looks like they are sold out now but I keep checking because when they’re in stock I’m buying more pairs.

    1. CD-I have the low cut version of the same shoes from Sam’s, I concur, they’re awesome. Hoping they’re not discontinued, haven’t seen them in a long time.

  3. In the PNW Cascadia zone, one of the biggest survival strategies is networking.

As a kid, I was educated thoroughly on the Good Friday Alaska Earthquake of 1964 which killed as far away as Hawaii. Check out the online photos.

I joined CERT which has now trained over 1200 in the county population of 71,000 and train with my team of 25 people monthly.

If you aren’t radio-capable and participating now, you most definitely will not be after the big one. Get active now.

Make your day a blessed one.
