Preparedness Notes for Thursday — July 25, 2019

I just heard about the passing of actor Rutger Hauer, at age 75 [1]. You will probably remember him for his roles in films such as Blade Runner, Ladyhawke, and Batman Begins.

On this day in 1897, Jack London sailed for the Klondike. While in the Klondike, London began submitting stories to magazines. In 1900, his first collection of stories, The Son of the Wolf [2], was published. Three years later, his story The Call of the Wild [3] made him famous around the country. London continued to write stories of adventure amid the harsh natural elements. During his 17-year career, he wrote 50 fiction and nonfiction books. He settled in northern California about 1911, having already written most of his best work. London, a heavy drinker, died in 1916.

When I read of Rutger Hauer’s passing, I recalled an old 1990’s movie WEDLOCK, a futuristic prison which had inmates wearing a fixed collar with small explosive which decapitated the wearer when another inmate wearing another collar separated themselves from a fixed distance. No one was aware which collar was tuned to the other, so it kept the inmates from attempting to escape. Genius.

Have always enjoyed Jack London books and think them essential reads for anyone, especially young men, with any sort of adventurous streak. Living in an A-frame in the woods in E Wa. in 1972, the night before opening of elk season, snowing, fire in the fireplace, stayed up all night and read the entire book “White Fang”. Perfect setting and a perfect book.

I think one of Rutger Hauer’s best movies was “Wanted Dead or Alive”.
