Robert Stack played Francis Marion, “The Swamp Fox”, on the Disney series of the same name. Late 50s, I think. His small band of patriots exemplified the values we hold dear.

I later read that Washington was enormously grateful to Francis Marion for his work engaging a full division of British regulars and saving Washington’s troops from having to deal with them.
