Preparedness Notes for Monday – June 04, 2018

On this day, June 4th, in 1944 United States Navy Task Group 22.3 captured U-505 [1], a German submarine and with it an intact Enigma cypher machine. This was the first time since the USS Peacock seized HMS Nautilus in 1815 that the USN had captured an enemy vessel at sea. The sub, reunited with its periscope a decade ago [2], is displayed at the Museum of Science and Industry [3] in Chicago.

I remember crawling around in that sub when I was a kid. (In the museum, not on the ocean….)

Does it seem odd to anyone else a German coding device would have English letters instead of German?

Enigma machines were commercially available before the war and the English had to have had several, the whole Blecthley Park project was a cover up for a intel op that got the code book. The english were decoding as early as 1940.
