Preparedness Notes for Monday – April 16, 2018

April 16th is the birthday of two notable novelists– J. Neil Schulman and Samuel Youd.

Agorist-Libertarian activist J. Neil Schulman (born April 16, 1953) is best known as author of the novel Alongside Night [1].

The late Samuel Youd [2] (born 1922, died February 3, 2012) was the British novelist who was best known for his science fiction writings under the pseudonym John Christopher [3], including the survivalist novel Death of Grass [4] (titled No Blade of Grass [5], in the American edition) as well as the Tripods Series [6]of young adult sci-fi novel series. A fascinating man [7], Youd wrote prolifically, using eight pen names. He was a good friend of sci-fi novelist John Wyndham, and both of them were famous for writing what are often called cozy catastrophes.

Actor R. Lee Ermey [8] passed away yesterday. Ermey was known far and wide as the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanely Kubricks “Full Metal jacket” but I loved him best in his role in “Mail Call”. We will miss him.

Also passing away is Art Bell [9] of the “Coast to Coast AM” show. JWR was a guest on the show several times of the last few years.

I loved that scene in “Full Metal jacket”. It reminded me of my own basic training in the 60’s. BAsic training was tough and surreal but one of the best experiences of my life.

The interior of the barracks is almost identical to the Rifle Range Barracks at MCRD Parris Island South Carolina. While I went to P.I. in the ’80’s I would agree with TheRiver, Marine Boot Camp ‘was tough and surreal but one of the best experiences of my life’ hits the nail on the head.
My Respect and Condolences to the Ermey Family. The Gunny will be missed. God Bless and Semper Fi.
