Region-Wide:
This may sound repetitive, but… Once again, most of the Redoubt States rank well: The Most (and Least) Healthy States in America [2]. (A hat tip to T.Z. for the link.)
Idaho
The left of center Spokesman-Review (of Spokane) reports: Idaho’s PERSI the ‘envy’ of most other state pension plans [3]. JWR’s Comments: Yes, Idaho presently has one of the nation’s best-funded pension plans. But part of that is because of the current stock market bubble. The rest of their success can be attributed to their proving only modest and realistic benefits to state employees. Thankfully, most of the Redoubt States don’t have pension plans for their legislators (unlike California [4].) For most Idahoans, serving as a legislator is not a career. Their annual stipend barely covers their expenses for the short legislative sessions. I believe that they have the right perspective: It is just a part-time bit of statesmanship, not a career with a pension!

Montana
I heard about a Montana-based company that sells some great high security doors and locks: Guardian Security Structures [6]. They sell safe room doors, blast-resistant doors, bullet resistant doors, and a very clever weapons mount system that attaches to the inside of a vault door. Be sure to visit their web site.

For anyone wondering why the Redoubt states have such poor ratings for “highway safety”, there is this video from up in Montana [7]. Oh, and the fact that there are long commute distances for some workers, and 80 mile per hour speed limits, on some highways [8].
Eastern Oregon
