The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL [1]”. A disturbing escalation of hometown surveillance is on the horizon now.

Ruger P-Series Mag Identification

Commander Zero recently posted this great tutorial: Ruger 9mm P-series mag identification [2]. If you have a Ruger P-series collection, this tutorial will be a welcome addition to your viewing as you try to make heads or tails of the different magazines out there.

Death of a Bread Machine

We don’t use a bread machine much around here anymore. One of my sons has taken a liking to making artisan breads by hand and the family is happy to indulge him. In fact, we often end up eating alot of bread as he hones his skills. He often remarks that baking a cake is like science. You add the exact amount of ingredients and do the same things every time and you reliable get the same product. Bread baking, however, is more of an art because you are dealing with live cultures to create it.

Not all of us have the will (or the time) to devote to learning an art though and the “science” method is very appealing. Enter the bread machine. It’s an amazing device that very nearly makes baking bread as easy as baking a cake. But like all appliances, there is a limit. Here is some practical wisdom from Patrice Lewis: Requiem to a bread machine. [3]

Ann Barnhardt on Persecuting Preppers

Reluctant Preppers Interview: Persecuting Preppers & Annihilating Courage [4] (PART 1 of 2) — Ann Barnhardt

Ann Barnhardt also has her own podcast. The archives [5] are well worth a listen.

Reason #5047 to Leave Public School

Chicago charter schools have been found to be hiring teachers that have been barred from Chicago Public Schools [6] for reasons like abuse, misconduct, or poor performance. One might usually think that the charter schools are a viable alternative to Public Schools, but that’s obviously not the case here. There were 163 unidentified employees, 98 of them teachers, that were found working in the charter schools. This is only a small percentage of the workforce, but it’s huge when it’s your child that is affected. Thanks to reader V.T. for the link.

Second Amendment

Reader DSV sent in this link where the article shows Chuck Schumer (the Senate Democratic leader) urging democrats to hide their views on gun control [7] because of the upcoming 2018 elections. You can bet after the elections, those views will come out in force if more Democrats are elected or if the Democratic incumbents stay in office.

FN has issued a mandatory recall [8] of their M249S rifles. This is the semi-automatic version of the M249 light machinegun (or squad automatic weapon). According the company, they have identified a defect in the trigger group that can affect the reliability of the weapon and cause an “unsafe firing event”. Hmmmm.

Hometown Surveillance

The U.S. government has broadened the interpretation of which citizens can be spied upon [9] to include “homegrown violent extremists”. On the surface, this seems like a common sense move, but one only has to think back a couple of years ago when certain parts of the government were willing to call homeschoolers, preppers and conservative Christians, or Constitutionalists by the name “extremists”. I’m all for surveillance of those who are truly dangerous to society, but there needs to be some due process in making the determination of who those people are. Thanks to C.H. for the link.

A Whole New Level

Reader T.P. sent in this article on a Palm Beach County deputy [10]. An 85 year old man decided to weather hurricane Irma in place. When his family called the sheriff’s department to perform a welfare check on him, they found that he had fallen and hit his head. He was taken to the hospital where he sadly died. However, Deputy Cooke, who had received the garage door code over the police radio, broke into the house and stole money, jewelry and several prescription medications. The family reported the break-in and turned the video footage over to the sheriff,, but Cooke wasn’t arrested until five weeks later.

News Tips:

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact [11] form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

Hometown Surveillance: Unfortunately Trump is proving himself to be a willing and useful tool of the leviathan state, even to the point of delaying the release of hundreds of files (thousands of documents) related to the JFK assassination. Come on now, national security, really? After 54 years, the full release must be extremely embarrassing to the CIA and FBI, or maybe the Bush Crime family or to the Democrat and Republican parties, our Trotskyite Communist two party system. What in blazed did they do? Inquiring minds want to know.

So what else is new to think we might be considered to be extremists. After all, it is pretty extreme to want to be self sufficient and independent. How dare we be rugged individualists, shame on us. (Sarcasm alert!)

What is news worthy about the Palm Beach County cops is that he was even prosecuted(will see if it happens) as this is regular behavior and covered up 99.9% of the time. It was only because the video evidence was irrefutable was any action taken (five weeks later?) and will probably disappear in a couple months of paid leave.SNAFU
