Constructing and Finding Hiding Places, By Eli in The Southwest

…need for discreet storage in my personal life. I will approach this article from two ways: First, I’ll go over some of the more imaginative places I’ve seen things hidden, and hopefully share some tips and tricks that will open up more storage/hiding places for you. Second, I’ll go over some steps and methods to help you find things if you are the one looking. The better you get at finding things, the better you get at hiding them. Whether it’s hiding something quickly on your person or finding something on someone you are searching, or creating a long term cache, I hope this helps open up some new avenues to you. Part 1- Hiding things- So what are you hiding? I agree with JWR whole-heartedly that it is a lot harder for people to steal (or seize) what they cannot find.  Gold/silver, guns, ammo, USB drives, documents, etc. Anything…

PACE-BB: Distribute Your Guns

Sikki Phauthspuer Mr. Rawles, thanks for a great article. What are your recommendations for oils and greases for long term storage? What are your recommendations for solvents to cleanse them of that layer when ready for use? Bobby Waterman Excellent advice. Can some readers in leo and millitary describe how searches of residence are conducted. I expect metal detectors, to find the metallic junk covering your stash. Do they x-ray a house? Often the best hiding places are in plain sight disguised. Due to my mail order trail, I expect a knock on the door. How many boating accidents can I have been in? Widely distribute the items, as I suspect they will be busy. They want to go home each night too. All of my neighbors are scattered in the area with their deer rifles sighted in. The last thing in my safe is connected to some wires….. I…

…best of your ability. Avoid sticking out like a sore thumb( if your house looks like a bunker, it’s a target; if it looks like a mansion, it’s a target; if you are a known prepper, you’re a target; if you’re too vocal, you’re a target; wrong place, wrong time, you’re a target ) A little paranoia is a good thing. Pick your fights carefully, not emotionally. Have a plan A, B or even C. Realize that if they come to your house, it’s time to make an orderly retreat with you and yours, preferably to a preplanned secondary location (he who runs away, lives to fight another day.) Make it painful for them. Maybe caltrops or bear spray. An ornamental cactus bed, or pyracantha would be nice, but try starting some now if you haven’t already. A friend with night time sneak thief problems rolled out a roll of…

The New Urban Fortress- Part 2, by M.H.

…Because of zoning/building ordinances you have no hope of building this as envisioned but to remodel a existing structure(atrium type office bldg) to mixed use(office/residential stack)with the apartments only accessable by code/key secure elevator with “green” updates(roof garden, rain capture, solar ect)would be welcomed by local officials to get a empty building occupied and paying taxes. Your “offices/penthouse” would be the key to your plan with a “evacuation” and board up when TSHTF then all the improvements are there for your comfort. With the retail apocalypse underway start looking now, line up Architect/finance/commercial realestate(locate/buy/rent space) and building/zoning to find if this is feasible in the near future in desirable locations Anonymous I agree with the general consensus in these comments that hiding in a grid-down, Without Rule Of Law (WROL) scenario is not going to work. I would even postulate that the odds of successfully hiding is inversely proportional to the the number…

This is what we’re up against. Election reform in every state and primary RINOs like Liz Cheney should be the focus. I’m not very optimistic. benjammin We are not going to survive. Get it in your heads now. “Everyone gotta die sometime, Red.” “Everything that has a beginning, has an end.” “So this is how liberty dies, to thunderous applause.” “People were always getting ready for tomorrow. Letter Re: Hiding What is Mine

…will destroy them in the summer and the cold could possibly freeze the can goods in the winter. Under the house is a decent place to hide my stores with an even temp year around, but who are we kidding… this location is difficult to get to and under most houses there isn’t a lot of crawl space. More importantly the men in the black suits will probity take a long and hard look under the house anyway. And what can You do if your house is built on a concrete slab? I have read several articles about burying your supplies. I am ashamed to admit I currently have 65 pails in my supplies and more on the way. I have an old barn on my property and over the years I have given serious thought to tearing it down. I am so glad I didn’t. In my stall area…

Some Thoughts About Lying- Part 1, by ShepherdFarmerGeek

…witness is a sin. Silence is not. If and when they come for my guns and magazines, I will exercise my 5th Amendment right to remain silent. Although my rifle might be a little noisy. ShepherdFarmerGeek Agreed! and well said, Professor. It’s been a general principle in Jewish circles (I believe) that we have a moral obligation to defend the innocent. Right? And that includes ourselves. This obligation is simply a higher duty than our obligation to tell the truth. There will be times when these two things are mutually exclusive. ShepherdFarmerHardt With all due respect, Captain, (Soldier at the door) “Sir, are you hiding any Jews in your house?” (Me) “I refuse to answer your question.” (Soldiers proceed to tear apart the house looking for the Jews) (Soldier at the door) “Sir, are you hiding any Jews in your house?” (Me) – complete silence – (Soldiers proceed to tear…

Letter Re: Hiding Livestock From Looters

…in the ground to keep chickens out of view, but comments didn’t support this idea.   another suggested bringing animals into your house!  Since half of our property is wooded we were considering building a hiding place there for our animals and some supplies, perhaps with a few moveable pens to allow forage.  Would it be wiser to hide in the woods with the animals, or stay put at the house and guard the perimeter?  Thanks for your advice.  – Lori R. JWR Replies: There is essentially no foolproof way to conceal your livestock from looters and rustlers. I’ll begin with a bit of family history: In my late wife’s family, there is an oft-repeated story of hiding their horses from “requisitioning” by the Union Army, during the Civil War. (They then lived in Ohio, well inside Union territory.) Whenever Union troops would pass through town, they would hide their horses in their timbered…

Should I Bug Out or Survive in Place?- Part 3, by Jonathan Hollerman

…better. You should have serious OPSEC plans for your retreat, LP/OP’s, and develop strategies to defend your retreat against local threats. Any threat to your retreat that you can overwhelm with superior firepower and tactics… do so. That being said, if a military convoy, or a massive raiding party from the nearest big city is rolling down your road… GET OUT! Go through a basement tunnel or just run out the back door to a rally point. Most preppers spend tons of money trying to make their house into a fortress to protect their food… stop it! Take that money and invest it in a very well hidden, underground structure somewhere else on your property and OUTSIDE the four walls of your house. Let the big raiding force come in and take the 10% of goods in your retreat without a bullet fired and no friends or family members of…

Survivalism, Prepping, and OPSEC: An Alternative View, by Todd

Joe Good article My opsec is similar to yours and probably many survival blog readers. My job takes me house to house every day working with people. Ive found a lot of preppers out there. There not as prepared as they should be or as good at opsec Im not either we are all trying to do our best Thanks for pointing that out Retired Scout I also am retired military. I also am teaching youngsters at this time (private school, not a military academy). I also have reached the conclusion that to not preach a self-reliant doctrine to select people of character is suicide tactically to my own house, but also is not carrying the message of the Proverbs ant vs. the grasshopper. Yes, it risks my own safety to a degree, but I would rather endure this risk than that of total isolation where EVERYONE else is an…

The New Urban Fortress- Part 1, by M.H.

…and more desperate groups. We need to consider the idea of allowing “tactical” to take the backseat to “stealth” and then revisit the option of hiding in plain site. The family of Anne Frank successfully lived in their attic hideaway for almost two years while surrounded by their opposition. Even though the hideout was not tactically strong, the ruse worked for an extended period of time until they were actually betrayed. Their hideout was not even modestly sustainable. It was their need of help from the outside world that eventually disclosed their location. That said, it was the plethora of nearby structures that provided their cover. They had no tactical advantage, because they were not fighting the Germans. They were hiding from them. The question that comes to my mind, is there any way that you can combine extreme stealth and push tactical advantage to the back seat, to be…

COA Analysis of Common Survival Strategies, by JIR

…personnel, a hundred or more killers traveling together can extort more than smaller groups can steal. These groups will get larger as time goes by but they are doomed unless they can take over someone else s farmland and extort “taxes”. You may see groups like this move in to agricultural areas and set up shadow governments, taxing all the farmers nearby…or selling protection. Anyone who doesn’t play ball will be burned out. Expect them to use classic tactics like assassination, kidnapping, and terrorism to cow the locals. Local governments are going to probably hire many thugs and enforcers too. Telling the good guys from the bad guys might get difficult. Anyone trying to take your food is probably a bad guy, but it might be worth your while to pay him off. 7. Hiding. Some people are going to try to hide from the die-off. Hiding inside a city…

Two Letters Re: Advice on Construction a Hiding Place for Precious Metals in a Home

James Before building a house with a walk-in vault, for years I stored firearms and ammo in an old soft drink vending machine. Bought the non-working machine for next to nothing, removed the guts, and had a cheap gun safe (if necessary, a locksmith could re-key an old machine for a few bucks). It held a lot, had an excellent locking system, would be hard to break into, but best of all was invisible. Placed in my garage and later a barn, with a few tools and old boxes stacked on top, no one ever gave it a second look. – Bois d’Arc   JWR: Just a couple more ideas on hiding in plain site: Junk silver coins can fit in [tubular] clothing rods in your closets. If you take the felt bottoms off of most ceramic lamps there is a hollow are to stash stuff in though you will…

The Invisible Prepper, by Grey Woman

…well pump fails. Picking this house was not an accident. Vintage Car That cute vintage car safely stored in my garage as a fun summer weekend driver is also completely stock so as to be impervious to EMP. It’s also easy to repair, even for me. And, yes, I can! Basement and Bins You would never notice that the visible footprint of my basement does not completely match the footprint of the house. These older homes are so quirky. Pay no attention to that bookshelf full of clearly labeled winter clothes bins. I am so organized! Of course, you would never see that it conceals a homemade (by me with my own power tools) safe room that holds the results of all of my canning, dehydrating, bargain buying et cetera, which are regularly rotated into my small decoy kitchen pantry and cataloged in that binder, which you will also never…

‘Twas the Night After SHTF- Part 2, by H.C.

The intent of my article is to first, bring to view the reluctance issues we have that keep us from securing our stuff, and also to think ahead when actually doing it. The only thing worse than not hiding your preps, is hiding them poorly! Common Arguments About Caching (continued) In part 1, we began listing and addressing some of the common arguments against caching. Let’s continue with this. I Will Defend My Stuff If Necessary Will you defend your stuff? Have you thought all of that through? If you are caught off guard with a couple of nasty people or a group pointing assault weapons at your spouse and children, are you going to start pulling that trigger? Probably not. It is far safer to have all your stuff far away and give up what you have to “fight” another day. I brought up points in my poem from…
